A good dozen episodes in and you would evaluate this could be another "Noir," but then the writing takes this super-weird move with the mysterious holy books their meaning and WTF happened 12 years before that made Margaret and Madlax (along with Carrossea Doon) lose their memories. Honestly. I really thought this would be a great spiritual successor to "Noir," given practically the same cast/crew (change surface in the dub in some regards) were doing "Madlax." However the 2nd half of the series is where the show just gets flat-out WEIRD (the whole thing with the holy books their cater and WTF your overall villain in this leader of the criminal assort Enfant. Friday Monday just confuses the hell out of you). Honestly. I did expect a lot more out of this series after I saw the first volume a few years back when I got it during one of the 2 Achievers events that Brent went too. Production: Honestly this is where the show didn't go do by. The animation was great even with a lot of the Gazth-Sonika warzones. Director Koichi Mashimo (Tylor. cut/SIGN. Noir. Sorcerer Hunters. Eat-Man '98) did his usual stellar job giving us a visual masterpiece. Music composer. Yuki Kajiura delivers a tremendous follow up to her prior work w/Mashimo ( cut/write. Noir) with a beautiful sounding soundtrack and bring home the bacon with the opening and closing themes (both side projects of hers). The mechanical designs (namely the guns) done by Kenji Teraoka (all 3 go in the bomb: Stand-Alone Complex shows) was spot-on. The writing... this is where it had it's downfall. Other good performances include a spooky performance by Cynthia Martinez (Lina in the Slayers OVA/movies) as Letitica. Kira Vincent-Davis (Ruri in Nadesico. Shin-Lu in E'S Otherwise. Quon in Rahxephon) as Margaret's faithful maid. Elenore Baker; and Jay Hickman (Sho Zama in Aura Battler Dunbine. Mechazawa in Cromartie High School. The cozen in Kaleido Star) as the mysterious SSS aka 3-Speed the express that gives Madlax her assignments. Honorable mention to Braden capture (Hakkai in Saiyuki. Takeru in This Ugly Yet Beautiful World) who nearly stole an episode as Chris Krana the supposed son of the Galza military leader and to Brittany Karbowski (Mone in Yumeria. Anna in Le Chevalier D'Eon) who was a mysterious Nakhl. OVERALL: Honestly. I was expecting more out of this and hope that "El Cazador de la Bruja" improves on the semi-miss that "Madlax" was. While not the stinker that "Aquarian Age: contend for Evolution" was...."Madlax" has great action great acting superb music but with writing that seems to go off a cliff about 12-15 episodes in. If you can wrap your head around the way they explained things in the final arc.... then you might undergo enjoyed this a lot more than I did. GRADE: B- has it's good points but the plan/writing just seems to shift from 1st to 5th leaving you confused. Like I said before starts out GREAT then just starts to tail (though I like how they developed things up to around the measure when Margaret/Elenore/Carrossea go to Gazth-Sonika then things w/the books just got screwy).

First off a few of the characters are actually really alter particularly the hamster girl and the bunny girl. Thankfully they are reincarnated as (despite the wonky hair these girls are not furries and thank goodness!) The engrave designs are reasonably cute after all and the nice thing here is that all these girls are so convinced they're not in a sucky anime that you be to believe them! The voice actresses' enthusiasm is infectious much more desire the chipper Hand Maid May than the ennui-ridden Sister Princess. And while the lead is hopelessly stereotypical it's easy to manage to be the other way when he says something stupendously obvious. Inasmuch as the animation is concerned.. you can't ask too much from the animators since this isn't an action show so it's about average for the genre. Not bad but not great. The music is bouncy perky and barely tolerable to most Western ears but after a while. I was able to sit through it without gagging which I anticipate is a good thing. (I even caught myself humming the opening which probably What surprised me was the transformation of one of the show's weaknesses (its horrible concept) into one of its strengths. While all of the "pets" died tragic deaths our protagonist helps their current incarnations get over those traumas in a way that is actually very sweet and sensitive. It's not always slapstick and cheap jokes (granted there's a bit of that too) and there's more than just the "I be to date the protagonist" impetus here. I was fully prepared to grab the pan for what I thought would be a true turkey but Angel's follow surprised me by being more enjoyable than mockable. Despite its woefully stupid premise this show manages to create more smiles than groans thanks to its judicious use of the Power of Cute. I wouldn't label it great or even good but Angel Tales deserves a be as long as you go this genre and are willing to overlook the glaring strangeness of the setup.
