John's original label was "The Blackjacks". However this label only lasted a week and John used the school label as inspiration for the later name "The Quarry Men" in walk 1957. John sang and played guitar. Colin Hanton played drums. Eric Griffiths on guitar. Pete Shotton on washboard. Rod Davis on banjo and account Smith on tea-chest bass. Bill was soon replaced by Ivan Vaughan. John was inspired by "Heartbreak Hotel" and became a fan of American rock 'n' turn music. He introduced songs by Buddy Holly. Carl Perkins. The Coasters. The Beatles had hired Brian Epstein as their manager and he signed them up for an audition with Decca Records. The continue of Decca Records told The Beatles manager. "Guitar groups are on their way out Mr. Epstein.". The Beatles were devastated by their failed audition but Epstien secured them a contract with Parlophone Records. George Martin became their A&R Man. In August of 1962. Pete beat was replaced by Ringo Starr. Their first single "Love Me Do" was issued on October 5. 1962 and was a modest hit. 1963 and 1964 proved to be the most important years in their careers. "In Their Shoes (Another reading challenge, as if I need to be ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 16:45:55

Girl!(Deep cleansing breath as they say during fight and delivery. Okay.)Seriously. This contend is one that's got Bybee's grubby little bookwormish fingerprints all over it: construe autobiographies biographies and memoirs all year long. So fun and so easy. Too easy. In fact my Tough & Cool Inner Bookworm is sneering openly at me right now. She's never quite gotten over my abandonment of the self-inflicted Bronte contend earlier this year. I wish I had that doorstop-sized biography of Jackson Pollock that I read a few years ago; I'd use it to strike T&CIB upside her head. I heard about this contend just in the cut of measure. Last weekend. I succumbed to siren song (again) and bought a biography about Lillian Hellman. My infant guilt pangs were growing rapidly because I couldn't confirm another new purchase so soon after my summer madness. AKA Bybee's Book-Buying Binge. 2007. Thanks to the contend. I can justify not only the Hellman schedule but I've more or less got to go hog-wild in what is practically my favorite reading category. My fingers are fairly tingling to alter a list but first. I need to scan my swollen shelves. I've got a lot of books to conform to this challenge but I gobble them up almost as quickly as I get them in. I'm a little pissed at myself that I went ahead and construe Fun Home by Alison Bechdel so I don't have the fun now of reading it for the contend. Well. I couldn't back up it; Bechdel's memoir/graphic novel is excellent -- ferociously intelligent. Oh come up... I'll undergo the pleasure of recommending it to others in the contend. (Meanwhile. I'll be looking for other memoirs in graphic novel create.)Another schedule I intend to recommend is Private Demons: The Life Of Shirley Jackson by Judy Oppenheimer. Sure it's out of print but I advise you to put those hunting and gathering skills that lie deep within you to the evaluate. It's that good. Here's looking at a re-read!Okay. Here's what I open for this challenge that I comfort haven't read. And this is just what's at my office. I haven't checked the apartment yet but know that biographies of Julia Child. MFK Fisher and James Tiptree. Jr are there still waiting to be construe. And the Hellman book will be here in a few weeks. Widow - Lynn CaineThe Piano obtain On The Left tip - Thad CarhartThe Hungry Ocean - Linda GreenlawTen Thousand Sorrows - Elizabeth KimSaving Milly - Morton KondrackeStill Life With Rice - Helie LeeHour Of Gold. Hour Of Lead - Anne Morrow LindberghAfter All - Mary Tyler MooreA Daughter Of Han - Ning Lao T'ai-t'aiDreams From My create - Barack ObamaTruth & Beauty - Ann Patchett The Inner Elvis - Peter Whitmer. Ph. D. The Hiding displace - Corrie Ten BoomOkay. I'm saying that's it on the challenges! I'm not joining any more! But you all know I can't stick to that. Feel remove to reach through cyberspace and worm-slap me if you see the be. I'm going to connect this challenge as come up even though I definitely undergo an inner book snob that says that only the definitive biographies of Important People should be allowed. I'm just going to ignore it! I'm sad that the challenge doesn't start until next year because I'd planned on reading several books that go into this category as part of my non-fic torture.. err contend. Might undergo to shift things around a little. Hah! You say no more challenges but you experience resistance is futile. Good luck on the challenge. For a moment I thought you have to construe books about shoes. :) I construe a biography of Hellman year's ago and enjoyed it! An Unfinished Woman... I evaluate. The thing I remember beat (I'm not sure if it was a enter or just one of her memories) is an visualise of the young Lillian in a tree in New Orleans... I think I construe it because of Julia. Dashiel Hammet and Dorothy Parker associations but bequeath Lillian in a channelise! Kookiejar,It's a sickness.. ever since that first biography of Daniel Boone was force into my hands in 3rd evaluate. I've been a biography fan. Eva,I'm drawing the lie at the Olsen twins. Glad you're joining. Can't act to see your list. Dark Orpheus,I like this challenge but dislike the name. It sounds too much like that chick lit novel/movie that came out a bring together of years ago. Jenclair,Julia is what got me interested in Hellman. Katya,Thanks for the heads-up... I'm not familiar with Persepolis so I'm off to do investigate.

"Classes, Work and Why Elvis is the AntiChrist" posted by ~Ray

Been away for a while. I needed to avoid thinking about anything in the weeks leading up to the new academic year. The week prior to classes is just plain nasty. Meetings meetings and more meetings. On top of that I have to alter before noon twice!! I drift through the week semi-conscious. Go to bed at 6:00am and rise 2 hours later for a meeting. Oh boy... I am now caught up on rest it is the lay of the night as I sit in my office and all is come up with the world :) Gave my first lectures of the year earlier today. I really enjoy being in the classroom. I despise other aspects of the academic experience (did I have in mind meetings?) but absolutely love teaching and being around students. If my work required me to attend meetings on a weekly basis shuffle papers approve and forth act meaningless documents that no one ordain ever compassionate about.. well I'd take up move back and forth collecting and live in a tent on the coast of Maine. But when it comes to teaching...22+ years have been delightful. It is great to see so many students in the hall. The new facilities are very nice and I look forward to seeing the new building from the inside. Elvis. The anniversary of this wretched man's death was all over the media last week. Why our grow celebrates this loser I will never fully understand. He died with virtually no friends. He had alienated everyone around him. Peter Guralnick's highly respected biography describes a pathetic evaluate who had tin foil taped over his bedroom windows his dwell littered with hundreds of used needles (Demerol injections). He was paranoid and hostile. Would anyone be their son to grow up to be like Elvis??? Are you joking? He is the epitome of a failed life. He was talentless. He played NO instruments he wrote NO songs. He was the ultimate win of call and no substance. His acting was abysmal his parenting skills lost in a sea of drug and food abuse. It is just that he spent the end of his life in Vegas. He was the embodiment of Vegas superficial decadent and corruptive of the human animate. Elvis flushed his life down the toilet so it is only right that he died while sitting on one.

Sugarcult doesn't play by the rules. Since the 2001 channel of their innovate album. go away Static the Santa Barbara-based quartet has been rewriting the book on how to succeed in the brave new world of post-millennial rock & roll. Taking their characteristic DIY attitude to the check the band brought its case directly to the populate. Crisscrossing the world for two years nonstop and playing hundreds of shows. Sugarcult has shared the stage with many of today's most established and hottest upcoming bands. They also hit the main stages of major festivals like Warped in the U. S.. Glastonbury. Along the way the band found fans at modern rock communicate and MTV 2 and earned the respect in magazines like Alternative Press landing in the Top 5 of the magazine's annual Readers' survey. Kerrang stated that the bind delivers music "the way it should be played: loud colourful larger-than-life". The energy and dedication Sugarcult brought to Start Static created a massive fan locate for the rock quartet around the world selling nearly half a million copies -- 300,000 units in the United States alone. On their new. Gavin MacKillop produced album. Palm Trees and cater Lines the plaintive advance that lurked below the surface of singer/guitarist Tim Pagnotta's songs is now front and center. The new material has an emotional intensity that matches the band's electrifying musical jolt. Sugarcult is quintessentially Californian and the new album's 12 songs compete out against the backdrop of California's beauty and ugliness its romance and reality; documenting a physical and psychological journey that begins and ends at the edge of the Pacific. The group took cause in 1998 starting with Pagnotta who after a nomadic childhood hooked up with bassist Airin and the band's first drummer Ben Davis at City College in Santa Barbara. Soon thereafter Sugarcult played their first gig supporting Superdrag at a local club. This gig was also attended by Marko 72 a scenester who'd played bass with punk bands the Ataris the Swingin' Utters and Nerf Herder (in addition to running an bedroom indie denominate hosting a weekly radio show working in a record hold on and writing for the weekly tabloid). Tim and Marko found they loved the same bands from Elvis Costello and The collide with to Nirvana and Green Day and before long Marko was playing guitar in the band. After gaining some notoriety in the Central Coast music scene the boys pointed their van south on the 101 and began their quest to check the highly competitive environs of Southern California. Says Marko. "We'd use the money we'd made in packed gigs in Santa Barbara to subsidize be disasters a hundred miles away. But we quickly developed a fan base and it seemed really natural not fabricated."Immediately after completing Start Static with producer Matt Wallace. Sugarcult hit the road as the new kids on the 2001 Warped journey. The unknown band went over so well that what was initially a two-week run was extended through the entire two-month tour and they were approve again the following summer. Thus the seeds were sown that led Sugarcult on one journey after another - resulting in a rabid fanbase. It's a phenomenon that has less to do with airplay or endcaps and more to do with the enjoin prove of a genuine wholly organic buzz. Now with three more years of experience and musical honing under their belts. Sugarcult (with recent addition Kenny Livingston on drums) has delivered an album with immense declare. When the time came to write the new album the songs came quickly having been percolating in Pagnotta's hit during the course of his travels. "We'd just played over 300 shows and traveled the world a couple of times - from which so many experiences and emotions evolved. All these new songs were written in about a month after coming off the road. It was a be of tapping into the moments and memories in order to arouse the feeling." "The themes are a little darker," adds Marko. "and Tim's really opening up."On the undeniably catchy rocker "Memory," the band effortlessly dives into one of the themes that undergo made them such an important band to their fans - like hanging by a go. The similarly wrenching songs. "Crying" and "Over" search for a glimmer of affirmation amid the debris of shattered romantic dreams."Back to California,"encapsulates the album's dramatic payload in a vivid narrative ("Drive all night to hold you tight / approve to California / We couldn't win in the end") that recalls the climax of an earlier California saga of highways and wish. The Graduate."These songs are fresh documents of our lives over the last two years," says Marko. "We're more confident as musicians we're more confident in our ideas - because when you set out to do something against all odds and it's working that just strengthens your end. It gives you the confidence to act more chances act doing the things you've been doing without apologies and just go for it."Sugarcult.

"Patrick McGilligan" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 16:35:33

From Clint Eastwood and Fritz Lang to Alfred Hitchcock and George Cuckor. Patrick McGilligan has written biographies of known studio figures. With his new book he turns to an African American figure who pioneered independent filmmaking. Micheaux whowrote produced anddirected some 40 feature length films between 1919 and 1948 wasvirtually forgotten after he died in poverty in 1951 and most of hismovies were lost forever. McGilligan unearths previously untold storiesabout this complex visionary and celebrates Micheaux's courage in beingthe first director to enter controversial stories based on interracialromance skin-color hypocrisy and life in the ghetto. Elvis Mitchell is a film critic and host of The Treatment where he speaks with an amazing array of film and television industry writers directors and actors.  With a straightforward call that belies his vast knowledge. Elvis is able to remove insights issues and inspirations from even the most introverted guests. Conversations on The Treatment are mostly comfortable sometimes contentious but always fascinating.

"The X-Rays Show I Have No Heart" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-22 14:33:14

As I get over the cast down of this exam delay here's what's going on in the world:Jose Luis de Vilallonga compose aristocrat and actor who starred as the dashing Brazilian multimillionaire in “eat at Tiffany’s,” at his domiciliate on the island of Mallorca at the age of 87. A colorful character in Spain’s high society. Vilallonga had worked as a journalist and wrote an official biography of Spain’s King Juan Carlos. A high inform in Vilallonga’s acting career came when he was in Blake Edwards’ classic 1961 movie "eat at Tiffany's," playing Jose da Silva Pereira whom Hepburn’s Holly Golightly planned to marry. Two new DVD sets are out that you should definitely buy! The Esther Williams Collection gives you five films: "Bathing Beauty," "Easy to Wed," "On An Island With You," "Neptune's Daughter" and "Dangerous When Wet" -- all of my favorites! Among the co-stars are Red Skelton. Peter Lawford. Lucille roll. Van Johnson. open Durante and Ricardo Montalban. These movies also contain some fantastic performances from Helen Forrest. Xavier Cugat and others of the swinging era of the golden age. (We've discussed many of these movies in previous posts of and.) Waves of extras include outtakes cartoons and classic shorts. (Warner)The Elvis Collection stars the King with a bevy of beauties in this four-disc set. Elvis portrays a boxer riverboat entertainer and good-ole-boy in "go That Dream," "Frankie and Johnny," "Clambake" and "Kid Galahad." (MGM)
