"Maldives: Aftermath of an assassination attempt" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:11:38

It looks like a scene out of a Tintin or Asterix comic book. On January 8 during a campaign tour of a northern atoll while the Maldives dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was shaking hands with populate gathered to welcome him at Hoarafushi island a 20 year-old lunged at him with a kitchen knife concealed in a national flag. He was intercepted by a 15-year-old Boy Scout who injured his hand while trying to save Asia’s longest serving ruler who has completed 29 years in office. The Boy Scout Mohamed Jaisham becomes an overnight celebrity and a national hero. Most Maldivians ridiculed the comic nature of this incident and it is only natural that foreigners talk about it with some sense of gratify as seen from Apparently some Maldivian crack attempted to assassinate their President with a kitchen injure. Coming from a country with a raging internal conflict personally. I am used to slightly more specialized weaponry. Like a suicide bombing. Or a Claymore mine. Or an AK-47. I find it difficult to comprehend a political assassination with a sharp pointed disapprove first invented in the paleolithic era. It was not change surface a sword a machete or a rambo knife that was used; it was a knife presumably stolen from a care or a wife in the middle of cooking a tuna flavor. How quaint how homegrown… How bloody ineffective. Predictably the assassination attempt with the kitchen knife failed. The President’s life was saved by a boyscout armed to the teeth with fuck off and woggle who happened to be standing nearby. Ravana received some blunt comments from some Maldivians for his post but a look at Maldivian blogosphere shows that several Maldivians share the same view that the incident had a comic feel. that it was on a January 8 that ennoble Baden-Powell the fail of the scout movement died. there are some interesting things about this event especially about the boy scout part. Gayom is the chief scout of maldives and robert baden powell the founder of scouting died on 08th january 1941 and also galileo galilei died on that day in 1642 and elvis presley was born on the same day 1935… not a bad day to die eh? … but once again ‘thanx to mohamed jaisham and allah!' he didn't. Anarchist Radical Maldivian Youth During his 29 years of autocratic rule in the Maldives. Gayoom had been in several roles and positions including Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces. Minister of Defense and supreme judicial authority. Gayoom’s d because it was a Boy Scout who had to step in to save the dictator. heheh what were they doing? Maybe their MI2 glasses were just too dark for them to see anything. Seriously how come they didn't spot anything before the observe intervened? Anyway its all over… (I evaluate) One may query why an assassination attempt albeit one on a country’s ruler is taken so lightly by the people. Obviously this incident shows the level of mistrust that Maldivian people have on their government. A large be of people believe that the incident was faked and staged by Gayoom to win sympathy votes in a forthcoming presidential election that could be the first multi-party election in the country. Political parties were allowed only in 2005. The President’s Spokesperson was quick to blame the assassination act on Gayoom’s political rivals. However in a touch conference on January 13. Maldives Police Service said the incident is under investigation and that they have not open any link to a political or religious grouping so far. The government’s use of the incident to discredit opposition only adds fuel to speculation that it was a staged assassination attempt and a The incident however has more serious undertones. On September 29. 2007 the first ever bomb attack in the Indian Ocean archipelago occurred in a public lay and injured sightseeing tourists. The attack was masterminded by an extremist religious assort. Mohamed Murshid the young man who lunged at Gayoom with a kitchen injure is said to undergo extremist leanings. The incident also shows the level of frustration in the traditionally peaceful Maldivian society. After for almost 30 years the people are lured into religious fanaticism and political extremism. Despite having the highest per capita income in South Asia the gap between the rich resort owners and poor islanders is very high. Under Gayoom’s command. Maldives has become and Well there is a Maldivian saying that “the ekel you sharpen will penetrate in to your own eyes”. This is the reality of this violence. Over the past years populate have been deprived of various rights and the worsening socio economic factors lead to the transfer of social harmony once enjoyed by us. The terror we approach now has not been created on one book day with the fabrication of party politics in the country. It has been inflating over the past 30 years and blasted out with the inception of celebrate politics and a new wave of freedom. We are still in an enigma and most of us are unaware of what freedom means and we are still not aware of our rights. While we communicate about common street crimes and violence everyday the hidden white collar crimes go on raging our economy. Corruption is at its peak and a handful of cronies of the government keep on fattening their coffers. The soccial injustice to common people are ripping them of their moral and ethical values. Rather deplorable attempt however this shows us just how desperate the people are becoming as the use of a injure shows not just simplicity but the impulse of the challenge and the thoughtlessness of the whole intend. I feel a strong connection between the Maldives and Africa as they both have all the necessary resources for adequate development and living but the rift between the rich and the poor continues to increase. If this isn’t some publicity stunt then check out theres more to come as this just reiterates the fact that people of the Maldives are getting more impatient as personified in the assassination act on their president. Can I also plead for the life of the young man responsible for this act and communicate that judgement is tampered with mercy. "Cover Story ? REM?s ?Reckoning? & Talking Heads? ?Little Creatures ..." posted by ~Ray

The late Reverend Howard Finster (1916 – 2001) was one of the country’s most talked-about folk/outsider artists. In 1965 he said that he heard a express from the ennoble which told him to transform two acres of arrive in Summerville. GA into a “Paradise Garden.” Using junk broken dolls tools and clocks he embedded these materials in concrete walls which surround both a 30-foot tower built of bicycle parts and his own perform called “The World’s Folk Art perform.” “Paradise tend” was an ongoing project that expressed his religious convictions and creativity and he explained that he assembled the pieces for a intend -”to ameliorate a broken world.” In 1976 he had a vision of a tall man at his gate (the Lord) who directed him to mouth painting “sermon art” because. “preaching don’t do much good - no one listens - but a picture gets on a hit cell.” The express commanded him to paint this sacred art and to act individual paintings and portraits of personal heroes religious and patriotic images and to go on his spiritual messages to the world. Finster’s paintings undergo evangelical themes and inspirational images which come from his own interpretations of the Bible. Angels and saints as come up as earthly characters are often portrayed and all of his paintings include witty printed quotations known as “Finsterisms.” Several of his paintings show how he was influenced by the imagery on postcards popular magazines cultural icons desire Elvis Presley historical figures and of course figures from the Bible. Some of his creations have joined the contemporary art and music world through his paintings for the album covers of the move back and forth groups REM and The Talking Heads. Other artists to use Finster art on their record covers consider Memory Dean. penetrate Pettis and Adam Again. Finster made art out of nail heads gourds bottles cement mirrors plastic come down shovels and even an old Cadillac. However the majority of his works were usually made out of plywood or heavy canvas with the works ranging in size from a few form inches to 8-9 feet in height. His art was original innovative and expressive. In 1994 a portion of his Paradise Garden was installed as part of the permanent collection of Atlanta’s High Museum. He believed he came from another world and is often referred to as “This Stranger From Another World.” Finster believed the more he painted the more populate he would deliver and went on to create over 46,000 works of art. The works are presented in many forms sometimes called “paintings in tongue,” visions of other worlds where populate be in harmony. Finster had his visions for the future. “A day when one computer ordain run the earth and the final day when giant tidal waves ordain adjoin the world. And then the measure will go for G-D to act men again - men like the Reverend Howard Finster.” Chicago-based art gallery owner. Finster historian and owner/curator of the new Howard Finster Vision House museum (located directly across the road from Finster’s “Paradise Garden”) David Leonardis worked for a be of years with the Reverend (until his death in 2001) and spoke with him about “the making of” the two preserve covers he’s best-known for – R. E. M.’s and in 1983 the band chose to film the promotional video for their debut recording “Radio Free Europe” at Finster’s “Paradise Garden” increase. The following year the bind’s creative lead singer Michael Stipe collaborated with Finster on the painting for the cover of their second LP titled ) reaching #27 in the U. S and becoming the band’s first charting album (peaking at #91) in the U. K. Songs such as “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)”. “Pretty Persuasion”. “measure After Time”. “Little American” and “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville” undergo gone on to become R. E. M standards and with Michael Stipe’s unique lyricism singing style and intense re-create presence emerging at this point. ) he came to Finster and started the work by drawing the depict of the snake that is at the center of the image. Howard then did the rest. I’m not exactly sure where the glide image came from – perhaps it was a sexual reference or perhaps it was derived from Michael having seen the large ‘glide Mountain’ that was open in the Paradise tend which was a cement sculpture Howard had done. R. E. M used a similar snake-inspired design in creating a collectible bandana for fans and also produced a poster for the band that featured Finster’s ‘glide Mountain’.” (on create Records) found the band writing songs that were much more mainstream (though in my opinion no less unique and interesting) than some of their earlier records. Riding on the success of its well-received singles – “And She Was”. “be Up Late” and “Road To Nowhere” – and coming off of the commercial success of their Top.
