"They Can't Help Loving Elvis At Meet-Ups" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:48:29

TAMPA - These fans need no special day to celebrate their idol dead now 30 years but still rocking in their hearts. They meet once a month in a back room of Beef O'Brady's to sing the songs and praises of the King. "We do the 'American Trilogy' at the end" - a trademark medley of "Dixie," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "All My Trials" - "and dedicate it to the troops," Shelby Ewbank says. She's the coordinator of the Elvis meet-up group and wife of tribute performer Jeremy "Elvis" Ewbank. The celebration of the King of Rock 'n' Roll who first sparked teen hysteria in 1956 is a family affair for the Ewbanks. For the November get-together they're joined by their baby girl. Preslie and Shelby's 4-year-old. Crystalyn Jean Trammell who cracks up the crowd with her tough-girl rendition of "(If You're Looking for) Trouble." Shelby. 33 doesn't sing but she has baked her pineapple "sunshine cake" for the month's birthday celebrants. Jeremy the 38-year-old owner of Pro-Clean carpet service is decked out tonight in a scarlet show shirt rhinestone-spangled belt and the slick pompadour of the young Elvis. He has been performing for weddings birthdays and for 10 years and was a regular at Joyland and the 49th in Pinellas County for a time. He launches the evening with "It's All Right. Mama," gyrating in the karate-influenced style of the later Elvis. Nonprofessionals belt out their favorites too - people such as Tom Burkhead an insurance company project manager. Crooning the love song "Angel," from the movie "Follow That Dream," he sounds a lot like his idol. "I was around before there were iPods and Walkmans," says Burkhead. 50. "The only way I had to enjoy was if I were to sing it myself behind the lawnmower or something." Though Elvis dominates the night the karaoke performers sing others' songs too. Patti Perkins brings her Patsy Cline to the party drawing applause and laughs as she vamps "If You've Got Leaving on Your Mind," picking out a man here and there to serenade. She has been an Elvis fan since birth she says sweetly declining to say when that was. "I have loved him all my life - he was my first boyfriend." The retired insurance adjuster drives from Lithia to the restaurant on East Fowler Avenue for this meet-up. She also sings at another Elvis meet-up closer to home in Brandon so she waits only two weeks between her nostalgia fixes. Most of the two dozen people in attendance met at the annual Tampa Elvis Festival. Shelby says. The Elvis Tampa Fun Gathering and the Brandon Elvis Fun Gathering recruit new members through (type "Elvis" in the topic field). It's obvious Elvis lives here. A couple of singers wear sport shirts emblazoned with the King's image. Bushy sideburns abound. Mark Andrew Smith also wears the TCB pendant with the lightning bolt which originated with Elvis' hired friends. It means "taking care of business - in a flash." "People call me 'The Country Elvis,'" Smith says. The retired soldier and nurse who says he's "49 and holding," developed his love of music from his guitarist father. "He used to play with Little Jimmy Dickens and Ferlin Husky." He entertains the crowd with Elvis' "Return to Sender" and later. Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." The roomful of fans strikes a common theme in an effort to describe the star's effect on people then and now. They love the true-life fantasy of a poor boy from Tupelo. Miss. who became rich and famous and never forgot his roots. "People can tell when you're real and I think he had genuine concern for a lot of people," says Bree Youngblood. 50 a Lakeland woman who performs with her Elvis tribute singer husband. David. "I just always thought he was the real American story," says David. 46 who sports the bushy black haircut of the later Elvis. "He proves you can do whatever you want to do."

"Awards Week on the 4:30 Movie" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:38:49

Ah we miss those days... Godzilla Week. Elvis Week on WABC-TV in the metro area. But back to now. MLB starts handing out its regular season awards today so its time to give our awards as well as take a be approve at our pre-season predictions and where we ended up. Rookie of the Year (11/12)Pre-season Predictions: AL - Delmon Young NL - Chris YoungWe literally went "Young" for our picks and although both had pretty good seasons neither is our choice for Rookie of the Year. AL - Dustin Pedroia. It pains us to say so but the little gnat shook off a horrendous April to hit.317 with 50 RBI and 86 runs scored. He did the job much more than his over hyped teammate. Dice-K. It has nothing to do with selecting this award but his post-season play showed that this guy is going to be a pest for a desire time to come. NL - Ryan Braun. This is a close pick over Troy Tulowitzki. You can't go wrong with either choice but Braun's numbers are just too hard to look past - .324-34-97. 91 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in just 113 games. He and Prince Fielder could give an incredible 1-2 punch for years to come. Cy Young (11/13. 11/15)Pre-season Predictions - AL - Johann Santana NL - Carlos ZambranoBoth picks had their Cy Young moments but Santana had some very un-Santana moments and Zambrano was consistent in his inconsistency. AL - Josh Beckett. Beckett dominated and wins this award easily ahead of C. C. Sabathia. Fausto Carmona and Chien-Ming Wang. Beckett compiled a 20-7 mark with a 3.27 ERA. He posted an amazing 194/40 strikeout to go ratio. NL - Jake Peavy. The Pads right-hander couldn't get it done against the Brewers on short be but he dominated the toughen. A 19-6 preserve to go along with a 2.54 ERA and 240 K's. Peavy only walked 68 batters as he won the pitching triple enthrone (Wins. ERA. K's). MVP (11/19. 11/20)Pre-season Predictions - AL - Travis Hafner NL - follow UtleyAL - Alex Rodriguez. While our choose had an off-year. A-Rod exploded in his go year. We won't bother to repeat the numbers. An easy win over Magglio Ordonez. NL - open Rollins. Had the alter aggroup just wrong move of the DP combo. Utley could have been had he not gotten hurt. Meanwhile. Rollins hit.296-30-94 with 139 run scored. He along with the Tigers' Curtis Granderson joined the exclusive 20-20-20-20 club matching at least that total in doubles triples home runs and steals (41). Rollins talked the communicate and backed it up with his play. 2nd displace - Prince Fielder. Manager of the Year (11/14)We didn't alter any pre-season guesses here since it's kind of silly. AL - Eric fasten. The Indians bounced approve from a disappointing (of course we weren't disappointed because we knew they would take a step approve last year) '06 season and were the hottest AL team entering the post-season. NL - Charlie Manuel. A lot of people are handing this award to Clint Hurdle but this is manager of the year not of the measure 3 weeks of the season. We give it to Charlie Manuel who kept his team close with a subpar pitching staff and thru injuries to win the NL East over the heavily favored Mets. Manuel came this change state to getting fired during the year. We furnish 2nd place to the Brewers Ned Yost.

But not the "hunka-hunka burning love" right? I heard that that was on the original too but I haven't heard it so I can't say. I have to adjudge that I like the liveversion of that song better he seems more into it. While we were talking about the Memphis-albums from the early 70s (Stax). I think there was a big come about which they blew to really make a great series out of it. Imagine three complete albums recorded in Memphis and then he presents them live with his first Memphis-show since '61 released as "Recorded live on stage in Memphis". I think that album is a very good one (in fact I wished the Aloha show would've been this good performance wise). He's in very strong voice and sings with power which was this way on many of the early '74-shows. Unfortunately he only played "Help me" from the Stax-sessions. Over the years "If you communicate in your rest" "My boy" "Raised on rock" "It's midnight" "Promised land" "Spanish eyes" "Good time Charlie's got the blues" were all played be and "You're love's been a long time coming" was rehearsed (which shows how much respect he had for the material that was recorded). That could've been such a fantastic show and very good promotion for his new albums. Just a little thought The hunka hunka is there but not emphisised as much. I think the song ends with the first verse being sung at the fade. What I am getting at actually is that Elvis had to have gotten into Burning like once he started recording it because it's hardly a create by numbers adjoin version. Getting him into the mood may have been hard but I think he really made a classic once he decided to record it. That live album would have been a good idea he probably just didn't evaluate of it. So yesterday was a big Elvis-event on a german TV-station as I have posted before they showed "Flaming star" after that "Elvis by the Presleys" which was nice but imo has no reason to exist because it's basically the same stuff that was already know but Jerry Schilling and Michelle Beaulieu were tehre for a little land Boys-connection (unfortunately the don't talk about any relationship between Elvis and the boys). After that came the first big thing a new edit made out of the deluxe-DVD-edition of the '68 comeback special. Very well done and changing between Stand-up and Sit-down-shows unfortunately none of the production numbers (except "Trouble/Guitar man" and the new video of "If I can dream"). I wished they wouldn't have showed one of the stand-up "Blue suede shoes" but the one from the second sit-down-show. After that came the Aloha-concert and fortunately they mostly used the stronger performances from that show no boring "Hound dog" or "color suede shoes" the beat thing they showed was "I can't stop loving you" and that one is only bad because of the intro which Elvis totally blew. Actually you could almost think that this was a great contrive which it wasn't of course. They even used different camera-angles from the Deluxe-DVD. All in all a great evening of Elvis on TV and finally they showed that you can pay tribute to him by showing some of his finest hours and not "Paradise hawaiian style". At the same measure as "Elvis by the Presleys" and the Comeback was shown another TV-station showed "It happened at the world's fair" and today they gonna carry "Viva Las Vegas" while a german-french art-TV-station is doing another Elvis-evening. wish that I can watch enough of that as it's my care's birthday and we all go out tonight. Oh and the new best-of "Elvis - the King" which was advertised very much because the TV-station along with another one and Germany's biggest boulevard-magazine are the partners is selling very good over here. It was top 5 yesterday on amazon de and the awesome "Viva Las vegas" double CD was in the 60s. wish that they'll show "That's the way it is" and "Elvis on tour" for the next anniversary. I think this is the way to go to get Elvis back into everyone's minds as an artist Here's something cool. It's a documentary about the making of Elvis' first album (the one with the cover that "The Clash" used for "London calling"). Sam Phillips. DJ Fontana. Scotty Moore. BB King. Keith Richards and Ernst Jorgensen are among those who where interviewed. You can hear how Sam Phillips was the producer during the Sun-years and how Elvis became his own when going to RCA (I hope those sessions you can hear little snippets of will be released on FTD someday). I think it could've been a little deeper with more detail but at least there is a documentary that is about Elvis' work and music. It features some live-performances too. What do you guys think about it? It's ok but should undergo been more strictly on the album because so much of what's there is covered elsewhere. Also got tired of the celebrity talking heads. I would undergo rather seen a little more of the musicians who worked on it and of course more Elvis footage. There's a lot in Elvis By The Presleys that isn't covered elsewhere. But not too much about his bring home the bacon or am I wrong? I only saw the edited version of "Elvis by the Presleys" that was shown on TV and to tell you the truth. I'm not very express emotion on seeing the rest if all is about this personal stuff. There's a lot in Elvis By The Presleys that isn't covered elsewhere. Lecturing at USC on Friday. The topic is early silent animation. I'm filling in for a professor who is recovering from some surgery. She has picked the screenings and I'm not quite sure what they are (I know generally what it is but no real specifics). Apparently I'm covering Charles-Emile Reynaud an early (as in pre-Lumiere) animator who developed enter perforations (although his were in flog bands holding plates of furnish together). I've never actually referred to him in lecture before because although his bring home the bacon is fascinating for being so early and non-photographic it had little affect over the animation industry as a whole. He had previously developed the Praxinoscope which was a slight improvement over the zoetrope. Anyway- meticulous scientific guy who nobody cared about. There is very little written about him which is a compel. The be of the lecture should be a little less conceal but it's nice to have something so far out there to begin a class with. I bequeath reading about his work in Bendazzi's Cartoons and feeling flabbergasted by how change state and yet how far it was to cinema. Really wish someone had filmed a performance... :P.

Besides organizing the event both these guys sang very well. watch this and create by mental act the good times we undergo...

"ELVIS DIED 30 YEARS AGO." posted by ~Ray

I moved to Hawaii in 1970 my soon to be preserve was in the Navy. We were young hippies and went to MANY a contrive. I became pg in 73 when Elvis played at the HIC (where we went all the measure to see acts). a friend of ours had an apartment high-rise next to the HIC. The night Elvis played it was televised so we got some beer and snacks and sat in the apartment and on the lani had the t v on with appear off to check it and actually HEARD the whole contrive 'live'. AND we saw all the hipe limos body guards etc. It was way cool............... His daughter. LisaMarie was on Good Morning America & they played move of a duet she just made from a replica of Elvis's song "In The Ghetto". It was amazing. I be to hear it but don't experience how. It's on aol online? G'ma - did you analyse YouTube? They usually ordain undergo that kind of cram or check the Good Morning America site. Anyway. I bequeath I was driving home from bring home the bacon when they announced on the communicate he had died. I couldn't believe it. Next day at bring home the bacon some of the other ladies who were a bit older than I was were really disturb. A lot of them had seen him in concert. I really enjoyed watching the DVD of his 1968 Las Vegas concert. To me that WAS Elvis. I was too young to remember his really early stuff but enjoyed his mid to late 60's songs desire "In The Ghetto" and "Kentucky Rain". I do remember where I was when I heard the news. I was listening to the communicate outside a laundromat in assemble Worth Texas. I was chillin' to some tunes waiting for the wife to come out (sexist bastard that I am) when they interrupted the air to announce the news. They played "Peace in the Valley" by the King. I evaluate I cried. I had set my DVR to preserve something called "Aloha from Hawaii" the other day. It turned out to be Elvis at the Honolulu Center taped in 1973. While singing he walked to the edge of the stage and leaned over and a woman in the audience reached up and placed a lei around his neck and he kissed her............. that lucky gal lei'd Elvis!!! I remember exactly what I was doing and where I was. I was sitting on my living room surprise with the head phones on. I was listening to Led Zepplin. My beat friends mom came busting through the door in tears (she and I were huge fans) and told me. We cried for a long desire measure.
