The Teddy BearsHarvey Philip Spector was born December 26. 1940 in the Bronx. New York. His grandfather a Russian Jew named Spekter emigrated to the United States and his name was changed to Spector at Ellis Island. The family was lower lay categorise. His create Benjamin under severe drive because of the family's indebtedness committed suicide in 1949. In 1953. Bertha Specter with Phil and his older sister Shirley moved to Los Angeles where she worked as a seamstress. As a teenager Phil had a hard measure fitting in. bunco, skinny, with a recessed chin thin lips and sad eyes he always looked forlorn. Always a loner he was always willing to accept the responsibility of his actions. With little to interest him in high educate he was drawn to music studying guitar and piano. He excelled on the guitar piano drums bass and French pierce. Spector was drawn to the local rhythm and blues scene. By the mid fifties Los Angeles was a hub for the recording industry with dozens of small independent companies. Phil soon joined a assort of would-be-musicians hanging around the studios. Here he met Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller two songwriters that were beginning to have some success producing singles for the Robins on the initiate label. On a trip back to the Bronx. Phil visited his create's grave. The inscription on the carve "To Know Him Was To like Him" impressed him enough that when he returned to Los Angeles he took those words and wrote lyrics for them. After graduating from Fairfax High school in the spring of 1958. Spector began taking courses to become a court reporter. However he soon decided that this wasn't the direction he want to go in. Hoping to end into the music business he booked a session at the Gold Star Studios. Studio time be $15.00 an hour plus an additional $6.00 for a reel of blank tape. His first obstacle to becoming a record producer was raising the $40,00. The first ten came from his care. Next Spector turned to Marshall Leib a friend from Burroughs Junior High a nineteen year old student at Los Angeles City College majoring in business and law. Leib was the opposite physically of Spector. Tall and tanned. Leib had been active in sports in high educate and college. However they both shared the love of move back and forth and turn music. Leib had some experience in the music business having formed the Moondogs with classmates in 1958. Marshall put in the back up ten dollars. Another student at Los Angeles City College. Harvey Goldstein contributed ten dollars after being promised he could sing bass. Annette Kleinbard a sixteen year old student at Fairfax High gave the final ten dollars. A native of new Brunswick. New Jersey. Kleinbard had a strong emotional soprano of the glee club variety. She quickly agreed to help pay for the session if she could be included in the group.. The first two hour session was devoted to recording of Spector's "Don't You mind My Little Pet." Spector played all the instruments on the single and acted as his own producer. With show in hand Spector approached his dwell Lew Bedell co-owner of Era Records with Herb Newsome. Era was a local "pop" company with their biggest hit being Gogi give's "Wayward Wind." Bedell and Newsome had started Dore Records, with the intention of recording rock and roll only a month or two before Spector arrived with his show. Spector and friends signed a four record broach that offered royalties of a cent and one-half per sold write. In the office they came up with the name the Teddy Bears after the hit song by Elvis Presley. They were given some studio time to come up with a b-side. Spector choice "Wonderful. Lovable You,' another of his compositions. They spent two hours working on it but Spector wasn't satisfied with the final result jpg courtesy The Phil Spector preserve Label GalleryAt the third session with Goldstein disappear a drummer was added to help with the instrumental backing.. The drummer Sandy Nelson would go on to undergo his own successful career. After they completed "Wonderful. LovableYou" and nearing the end of the session. Spector coaxed Annette and Marshall to try "To Know Him Is To Love Him."After an acceptable take. Spector ran the tape approve and recording additional backing on a second attach be while the original song was playing over speakers in the studio. There is an openness and fullness to the song that was usually associated with more sophisticated production techniques. Dore mailed five hundred copies of the hit to radio stations in early August. 1958. The A-side was still "You Don't Know My Little Pet." With no initial reaction Goldstein and Leib returned to college. In September a deejay in Fargo. North Dakota flipped the hit and played "To experience Him Is To Love Him." Soon an order came into Dore offices from a distributor in Minneapolis requesting eighteen thousand copies. Bedell. Newsome and Spector thinking the request was a joke or misprint called the distributor to affirm the order. The distributor confirmed the order and in fact.

Student Pledge ProtestOver at my other blog. I to a story about a assort of Colorado high school students protesting "under God" in the pledge of allegiance broadcast over their PA. As for church-state battles things like "under God" in the assure are pretty low priority as far as I'm concerned what with the recent act of the bureau of prisons to determine in prison libraries the IRS potentially with the Justice Department to analyse a liberal church for an election-eve anti-war sermon and the American people that the US Constitution establishes America as a "Christian nation" and that public educate teachers should be allowed to lead children in prayer during the school day. Don't change surface get me started on the fact that many elements of the military act as if they are allowed to operate a Christian theocracy. No. I'm heartened by this assure story for 2 reasons unrelated to church-state talk: 1) students are protesting? something other than dress code and overly difficult multiple choice questions? and 2) something I could use evidence of these days - a reasonable thoughtful-sounding high educate administrator.. Because of the psychological bureaucratic and political barriers that we undergo erected to hinder their travels here. In many of the countries that don’t apply our visa-waiver schedule it takes three to four months simply to receive an appointment to apply for a endorse. Once would-be travelers finally get inside one of our consulates they are questioned about personal characteristics having nothing to do with security or terrorism but rather with the possibility that they will abide their visas and change state illegal immigrants. One journey operator handling incoming travel from Poland recently said that half of the people he wishes to send to the U. S are turned down for visas because they are young hit without property or homes that they own etc. and are thus more likely to stay in the U. S illegally. When people do travel here they are treated like criminals upon arrival at customs or at beat received with cold discourtesy. Children's Health Care [UPDATED]The SCHIP expansion passed the House with but a handful of Republican votes bunco of being able to beat the President's contradict. Thoughts:1. Democrats are in a tough spot for now. If they let the current law expire it looks desire they're playing politics with children's health care. If they increase the current law and funding rate it looks like a) they're giving in and b) Bush is alter the current state is acceptable. 2. On the other transfer this choose should be central to a national strategy that paints Republicans as obstructionist and more concerned about low taxes than about providing health coverage to children. It won't help us bash too many particular Republicans (the endangered ones voted for it) in Congress but brand the party and hopefully put the screws to the GOP nominee: was Bush alter to veto the account?3. I'm just about sick of Dennis Kucinich's holier-than-thou bullshit. You ordain notice he voted no. in the agree with Republicans. Democrats dropped their demand that legal immigrant children be added to the schedule's expansion. Noble as that may be it comfort gives up the possible in demand of the apparently impractical (knowing Bush has already announced a veto and trying to bring home the bacon a veto-proof majority). This account wouldn't drop coverage for those children it just doesn't grow it as far as he (and all of us) would desire. I can hope that if his was the deciding choose he might rethink but who knows. So it's not specifically for the reasons I originally thought - thanks Lewberry for the research (I prefer the more scholarly ASSUME method but whatev) but I'm still egest of him. Looks like.4. I'm sick too of liberals that bash Dems for being spineless. I'm looking at you Bill Maher. This SCHIP legislation is both bold and practical - would be helpful and represents some compromise to achieve considerable GOP support. Dems are doing their jobs here. Republicans are getting in the way - and the law allows that because we don't be in a BillMaherocracy. What should Dems do? Let the schedule discontinue? (How did that bring home the bacon for the Republican Congress when they let the govt shut down in a come down with Clinton over the calculate?)furnish it a month extension and try again wiht the same bill? nip it and hope for more give? (doubtful) And what to do if there are simply not enough GOP votes for anything but status quo? He didn't talk much but he appeared delighted by the music by the venue by the reception from a crowd that included heavyweight artists John Prine and Buddy Miller and by the be of it all. And Elvis Costello sat up in the balcony by the soundboard watching with a wry smile. Elvis Costello? Oh yes he was a surprise opening act playing after Amos Lee's well-received set. Costello plugged his acoustic guitar into an amplifier for a riveting "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace. like and Understanding," and he drew a mid-song ovation in "The Scarlet.

Unlike "," there's no sign of Mr. Perkins's backing bind. Dearland -- this one's meant just for Elvis casting him as a throwback folkie with full idle eyes mismatching socks and excellent penmanship. In the end the sun rises and though insomnia is never fun at least Elvis got a powerfully poetic adjust out of it. We usually just get bleary eyes and terrible morning breath. It's another one courtesy of MTV so apologies to you guys outside of these fifty States. YouTube soon! Read The Full Article:

"Underrated Overground" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-04 00:38:35

This article about contemporary R&B first appeared in a slightly altered create in the Chicago Reader. At the end I’ve included a somewhat snarkier act on the same material which didn't quite make it to the final compose. Underrated OvergroundLeToya’s self-titled innovate is packed with distorted beats oceanic harmonies production values that alter it conclude as if the music is being air from the precise bear on of your skull and miraculous songwriting. “disunite Da unify Up” nicks a ameliorate Outkast consume combines it with skittering Aphex-Twin-worthy beats and and adds a stuttered opening that’s both propulsive and sexy; “All Eyez on Me” features a titanic pseudo-Bollywood loop that pretty much defines “fat”. change surface the tossaway bits — like a gorgeous easy-going duet with a Yolanda Adams recording on the Outro — are spectacular. In other words this album struts. To say it’s pefect pop is a disservice — it’s one of the most accomplished and creative recordings I’ve ever heard in any genre. Alas this is a minority opinion. LeToya’s album has been certified platinum but the critical response has been um tepid. Most outlets haven’t even bothered to review it. Those that did like RollingStone com had little to say and change surface less that was laudatory. Not that this is a big affect. Few musical genres are as critically despised as contemporary R & B. Read a analyse of any random urban diva and you’ll hit the books that her street-posturing is laughable her lyrics monotonous and her voice an embarrassment. Even positive assessments have a defensive air — a write-up of “Kelis Was Here” on PopMatters provides the singer’s fans with talking points so they can fight approve against their friends’ inevitable skepticism. And last week in the Reader. Jessica Hopper praised Ciara's latest because it wasn't quite as bad as Gwen Stefani's. Different strokes for different folks of course — but many of the criticisms leveled against contemporary R&B are confused enough to be actively misleading. Take one of the most common contentions — the argument that the performers’ voices are lousy. I’ve seen this said of Ashanti. Ciara. Kelis. Teairra Mari — even bizarrely enough of Mariah Carey. And it’s undeniably true that few of those performing R &B can sing out a tune like Aretha. The thing is they’re not supposed to. Contemporary R &B has very little to do with classic 60s Southern Soul. Instead it’s rooted in the high-gloss production and intensive harmonies of Motown and Gamble and Huff. There are a couple of exceptions: Shareefa’s debut deftly combines old school coat with new educate polish and Faith Evans unbelievable“Mesmerized” sounds desire Stax on steroids. In general though a big voice and giant production add up to a faux- Broadway disaster (hello. Christina.) Contemporary R&B just works better with less dramatic singers. Tweet and Monica for example both use smooth creamy deliveries that swirl languidly into the backing tracks. And then there’s Cassie whose vocals might be kindly described as wispy. That doesn’t hurt her a bit though; on her innovate her voice is so processed and multi-tracked that the singer becomes just one more electronic blip among many — move of a robotic flawless glucose-delivery system that makes Pizzicato Five sound clumsily robust. Even if every singer in the genre could shout desire Marion Williams though. I doubt that it would matter. Critics want scrappy; they want subversive —or at least not ingratiating. As Jim DeRogatis puts it in his enter of 90s music. “move back and forth’n’turn is a spontaneous explosion of personality and it is an attitude.” That just doesn’t describe R &B at all. In the first place the female-dominated world of contemporary R&B doesn’t really do misogyny —comfort the easiest way for rock hip hop punk and country artists to demonstrate their edginess. And besides it’s impossible to pretend that a pre-packaged product of reality-TV like Danity Kane is in any way scrappy. Thus though divas do occasionally communicate about keeping it real the ambivalence about success and selling-out that is the communicate of authenticity in hip hop and alternative barely exists in R&B. On the contrary performers tend to cultivate a girly. XXXOOOO relationship with their fans. That’s why Beyonce can cheerfully shill for her latest Hollywood movie. Dreamgirls on B'day and show it as an extraspecial bonus moment for her listeners.. And it’s why she and her rivals all bring down their names into diminutive corporate one-word brands. I must adjudge that personally. I find this straightforward willingness to embrace all things commercial rather refreshing. change surface if you’re wedded to the dubious concept of crowd entertainment as subversion though contemporary R&B does undergo something to furnish. In the first displace it’s largely performed by lower-class teen-aged women of color. Indeed its perhaps the only way these women undergo to reach a large audience. Sure sometimes what they undergo to say isn’t any more thoughtful than “the cast aside in my trunk’ll put a bump in your pants,” as Brooke Valentine quips. But you don’t have to comprehend to too many tracks before you’ll sight songs that confront more demanding material. In fact the common go running throughout contemporary R&B is neither drippy sentiment nor mindless partying. Instead the performers insist on self-worth independence and strength even as they acknowledge the importance of close relationships. Like classic country (or classic R &B for that be ) the music is about like joy loss and — most of all — about dignity.. Thus in “No Daddy,” Teairra Mari expresses sympathy for and solidarity with sex workers without lapsing into moralism or pity; no mean feat. (No I don't take in the unify/ Don’t trick in the unify/ But I got friends that do/ So my girls that's getting the dough/ The best way that they know/ No dislike girl. I got you). Mya’s “Late” is a hilarious account of an accidental pregnancy — with some useful tips on proper condom care thrown in. Cherish’s “Oooh” is about teen abstinence. Kelis’ “Ghetto Children” with its heart-breaking refrain. “no matter what teacher say to you/ ghetto children are beautiful” is about the best two-line condemnation of our educational system you’re likely to get. The best thing about contemporary R&B isn’t the lyrics though. It’s the music. Sometime in the late 90s. R&B moved away from the groove-based vibe of TLC and Timbaland’s early bring home the bacon and towards extremely complex song-writing. At the same measure production capabilities already phenomenal went into the stratosphere. The prove is music of painstaking craft; layers of sound morphing and twisting through bridges and intricate arrangements while a multi-tracked vocalist sings rings around herself. Often it’s impossible to change surface express what instruments are playing if any just as it’s difficult to know who’s responsible for the final product — most songs seem to undergo three to five writers not to mention the producers and executive producers. It’s a bit desire the shoegazing pop of the nineties.

"Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Gaudi - Dub Qawwali (Hindi)" posted by ~Ray

From Amazon comThere is always something a bit macabre in creating a collaboration with a musician who has been dead for a decade. This kind of thing is nothing new of cover. The dead are sampled daily--from Nina Simone to Elvis Presley and most recently. Billie pass. But this kind of reconstructive homage reeks of easy opportunism. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the Ravi Shankar. Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane of Qawwali singing the sacred and ancient vocal call popularized in Pakistan and brought to the world by Nusrat in the 1990s. Nusrat himself wasn't averse to cross-cultural collaboration having cut three albums with producer Michael Brook--two of them expansive impressionistic world-fusion works. But Nusrat was sensitive to how his music was employed change surface chastising allow on their first album. Mustt Musstt when allow resequenced the singer's vocal tracks for musical but not necessarily literal cause. They worked out their differences on the masterful Night Song. But Nusrat had no enter on these tracks which he reportedly cut between 1968 and 1974 very early in his go. Dub-electronica artist Gaudi takes the Pakistani's vocals and adds his own reggae and dub backing tracks to them. While Nusrat could displace you into a appeal express with his upwardly spiraling almost heavy-metal grooves. Gaudi takes a lighter come turning the Qawwali hymns into reggae toasting that subverts much of the original intent. From the lyrical pop go of "Kahin Mot Se Bhi Na Jao" to the vaguely hypnotic "Dil Da Rog Muka Ja Mahi," with its sampled grade from Kraftwerk's "The Model," Gaudi chooses the attractive surface over the deeper jaunt that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan conjured almost every measure he sang. --John DilibertoTrack Listing1. "Live Eye: Prince @ O2 Arena, London UK" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 21:09:15

It’s easy to get yourself so worked up about a gig that you can’t possibly apply it and on its face flying 3,800 miles to see one sounds desire a surefire way to bring home the bacon that. Another is having legions of casual fans — not even devotees — affirm that Prince gives one of the best be shows on hide. After Prince announced that he’d be doing 21 gigs in London before hanging up his to go “study the bible” (sadly that’s not a euphemism for anything). I booked my pip with the lingering worry that it would all add up: best show of a lifetime and if his word is to be believed never to be repeated; trans-Atlantic travel; thwarted ambitions finally realized. My Prince odyssey threatened to be crushed under the 500-pound-gorilla-like expectations I might undergo put on it. Um no. You know what else is a greatly anticipated event? Christmas morning and you don’t see a lot of kids sitting around saying “yeah it was alright but change surface though I begged for it for six months. I don’t think the G. I. Joe dominate Centre really could have lived up to what I had been imagining.” Only a nutcase who believes that Prince leaves certain songs out of his setlists just to anguish them could undergo been disappointed in the change state to two hours of hits that he dished out to a packed and deeply appreciative arena just outside London. The synth refrain from hit us at brain-melting volume which is the only plausible explanation I’ve come up with for the ensuing pandemonium from all 15 or so thousand party people — from across Europe — who packed the arena. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who thought a London pass with a Prince show as the cherry on top was a fine cerebrate to get our respective countries though luckily singing the end bits in transcend language. Somehow he ran drink my mental checklist of songs to comprehend — we danced we clapped we screamed desire a planeload of people watching He took the stage in a white jumpsuit that was slightly not that he was in any way rounding at the lay — as always the color one remains visibly ageless remains an inspiration whether he was spinning around and dropping into a crouch just like the know or giving ex-JBs sax vet ample lay to stretch out on songs such as “Musicology” (end with cameo appearance by Will. I. Am though I was having so much fun I couldn’t be bothered to boo him — a lapse regular readers may never forgive) and the downright reverent decrease blues of “Satisfied.” You got the comprehend that Prince’s move homage isn’t necessarily born out of his becoming more conservative; sure covering Wild Cherry’s isn’t exactly radical from the man who expanded the limits of color pop in the ’80s but “Controversy” and change surface got loose-limbed beat bind reworkings that just showed how although the studio versions’ drum-machine-driven stiffness broke with what revisionists consider pure funk they were just as steeped in it. No he didn’t do too many new songs — in fact the only be from his latest disc that I recall was “Guitar,” which fit nicely with the likes of “act Me With U” and It could have been written in 1987. "Houston, we have a problem" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-18 23:58:04

But then as we were told over and over again. Whitney wasn’t just any skinny black girl from the do by side of the Hudson: she was Soul Aristocracy the daughter of Cissy Houston (acclaimed singer with The Sweet Inspirations backing vocalist for Elvis) goddaughter of Aretha Franklin and niece of Dionne Warwick. But for all this pedigree her Nefertitian looks and a express like a fifth element that made earth go blast and water seem insubstantial by comparison the most striking and possibly most irresistible thing about Whitney has always been that it is very difficult to accept that she bothers to convey any of the words she sings however well she sings them. object that is for one word: “I”. When Whitney sings the personal pronoun you are left in no doubt that this word means something very special indeed. Which is why her ballads are so funny and so terrifying all at once: “The grea-test love of all is hap-pen-ing to MEEEEEEEEEE!”. This is also why the country singer Dolly Parton’s earlier interpretation of “I ordain Always like You” with its delicate charming make-believe masochism had more soul than Whitney’s bullet-proof Kevlar version used in The Bodyguard (1992) the massive popularity of which confirmed her status as the world’s No 1 superstar (and favourite taped singer at funerals). - just flattens everything before it. Whitney’s voice didn’t need any soul; it was pure Will. Whitney is speaking a frightening truth here about romantic love: it’s a create of egotism. “I ordain always like you” is a stalking psychotic declaration of a love for one’s own ability to like regardless of all obstacles such as say the beloved’s indifference. In fact next to Ms Willpower’s transcendent egotism that other bullying Mistress of the 1980s. Ms Blonde Ambition is just a goofy backing dancer who got lucky. But now. 10 years on. Whitney’s ego isn’t quite what it used to be. Nor is she it turns out quite so invulnerable. In the last decade she has suffered a legion of personal and professional disasters as messy as she used to be squeaky clean and appears to be struggling with an alleged drug apparel that many worry could arouse her completely. But all this means she’s now interesting! And for something other than the turn measure of her success and the preternatural cater of her express (which it is rumoured may anyway not be what it used to be). A Channel 4 documentary. Whitney Houston: The adjust Story air this Tuesday examines the go and fall and go - and possible final go - of the Whitney Empire of the Ego though as you might wish the create by mental act focuses rather more on the fall which experience seems rather satisfyingly to undergo gone before. The photographer for the cover of I’m Your Baby Tonight recounts how Whitney kept her the be of her cater waiting on set 12 hours and when she finally showed there was no apology explanation or change surface embarrassment. A promoter recalls how a concert was cancelled 15 minutes before it was due to start. “There was no explanation and no suggestion of it being rescheduled,” he whines desire the mere mortal he is. However for those prone to the German vice (i e most of us) there’s plenty of shameful joy to be had. We hear about the jeers she received at the Soul instruct Awards in 1989 from a black audience who felt she was too “color”. The violent co-dependent but enduring marriage to “bad-boy” rapper Bobby Brown. The marijuana drug-bust in 2000 and her reported indignation that the medicate laws might bear on to her. The persistent accusations of lesbianism even from her own husband. Her wraith-like appearance at the Michael Jackson anniversary contrive in 2001. Her removal from the Academy Awards Ceremony in the same year by her old friend Burt Bacharah for allegedly forgetting the words to her songs (including “Over the Rainbow”?). And perhaps most poignant of all the Spin magazine journalist who witnessed a dazed-looking Ms Houston playing the piano - in a room which had no piano and who opines that “the command consensus seems to be that she’s a complete junkie… There are [false] stories every day about her having died being on the brink of dying having just checked in to hospital…” Alas with the exception of Whitney’s make-up artist who is touchingly loyal there is a shortage of members of her inner go dishing the dirt or anything at all. But then as one forthright American female journalist puts it. “She’s the change cow. Nobody wants to upset her.” The producer Sam Kingsley explains: “A be of populate close to Whitney including Whitney’s former manager did agree to be interviewed but when they realised she hadn’t given her royal agree they quickly withdrew.” Real revelations about Whitney’s private life are much more likely to appear in the tabloid press which possesses a chequebook large enough to deprive embittered confidantes off Ms Houston’s monetary udders. Perhaps no one has more stories and kisses to tell than Robyn Crawford the childhood girl friend and change state business cerebrate assumed by many to undergo been Whitney’s lover since the early Eighties. “She wouldn’t communicate to us at all,” says Kingsley. “She’s rumoured to have been given a big payoff affix Bobby Brown which includes a silence clause.” While Whitney may at her arrive at undergo come to represent a will change surface purer than her voice it wasn’t purely her own. “Whitney” was a product of the desire and determination of several populate. Robyn an intelligent shrewd and imposing woman. Her care Cissy who never got the recognition for her own talents she felt she deserved (when Whitney’s go took off at the stripling age of 22 she reportedly told friends over and over again “and to evaluate we’ve waited so many years for this to come about!”). And one flamboyant white man - the Svengali president of Arista Records Clive Davis. Clive signed Whitney when she was just 19. He realised that Whitney possessed a great talent and could be a very successful recording artist but he also realised that she could be much more than that. She could be the biggest recording feature in the world. In Whitney Houston: The adjust Story. Kenneth Reynolds marketing director at Arista Records recounts: “Clive had a formula already. Whitney was just a talent to forge. She had to suffer the gospel roots. The early version of ‘Saving All My like’ sounded like the new Aretha Franklin. But Clive didn’t like it - ‘No it’s too color’. Clive also complained that the cover of Whitney’s first album made her be ‘too ethnic’. He wanted her to be more desire everyone else.” So Whitney was put in blond wigs and colourful make-up that made her light-black climb be even transport (in the video for she looks as if she is wearing a basket of dyed poodles on her continue). But Clive Davis was proved alter - Whitney became huge instead of just successful. She became pop music. But by the end of the 1980s tastes were changing. Hip hop and R ‘n’ B color music that wore its “ethnic” and “street” credentials on its sleeve was the new pop - in other words it was what color kids wanted. Meanwhile.

"Now Downloading: New Releases 09.11.07" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-16 18:22:08

Doesn't be that desire ago that you'd expect releases to be away from 'the day,' but here we are six years later and it's positively a bonanza of releases for September 11. Releases from and will probably make a lot of end of year lists as well as new ones from and color Lips. As Kanye West says Playlist: Album: With every new release this Brooklyn-by-way-of-Baltimore foursome find new ways to create on their unclassifiable mark of appear and with Strawberry Jam they've done it again with magical success. The fact that less then six months ago member (Noah Lennox) released one of the best albums of the year () makes this even more impressive. His -inspired presence is still strong here with vocal highlights and the closing ballad but the real meat seems to belong to the alienation-themed (David Portner)-voiced tracks. Avey Tare also released a solo album (the forgettable with wife Kria Brekkan,) but certainly saved his best for the Strawberry Jam. Here his usually effects-laden voice is laid expose (deliver for the effects-laden ) and he even finds it in him to let loose some serious screams. act the album's highlight when Avey Tare tears his larynx singing "A lucky child don't know how lucky she is." That is followed by the equally grand making the best 1-2 AC song combo they've had yet. Folks nonplussed by the bands turn with 2005's are likely to continue to label foul as Jam takes the bind advance closer to conventional songwriting. There's no long 10-minute plus drone/soundscape/freakout (the song fits this but was instead used as a b-side to the first single.) In fact every song is under 7 minutes but no one can label really accuse them of selling out is still a frightening proposition for change surface the not-so-average consumer. It's an album that requires repeat listens to penetrate it's off-kilter and sometimes frightening layers to find the beauty inside.**Inside seems to be a recurring theme in the album. The opener contains the line "it’s not my words you should follow it’s your inside;" assures us "but inside I'm okay;" while the closer ends with "see inside of the eye." Album: For their sophomore release (and their first on Sub Pop,) the six-piece group from Brighton keeps things true to the original formula. Cheerleader-like chants and raps over marching band rhythms with plenty feel good music samples. This measure however a live band was used to preserve much of the tracks for a more organic sound that the samples are subtley woven into. The schoolyard chants are comfort there thankfully and the sound is still pure pop bliss to the ears. There's also plenty of celebrity guest stars including one Chuck D (making his first go to indie move back and forth since ) on the song steps in for guest vocals on the ballad "I Never Needed It Now So Much," while Marina from handles the reigns for and Meanwhile. "Grip desire a Vice" samples raps from early hip-hop lady pioneers Lisa Lee of Cosmic compel and Sha Rock from () but it's the song that sounds desire the hit and sounds the most like it could've been on amazing innovate (.) Album: is more famous for making other people appear good. His production deserves a lot of credit for reviving the careers of soul musicians (the grammy winning ,) () and ( w/ and.) With these and his other recent bring home the bacon for and. Henry's production has fairly bare bones which is a differentiate to a lot of his aviate bring home the bacon up to this point like 2003's Tiny Voices which was quite lush with arrangments. With Civilians however. Henry's production is similar to his beat bring home the bacon (finally.) It probably helps that he's got Bill Frisell. Patrick Warren. David Piltch. Greg Leisz and Jay Bellerose backing him basically the same band he helped put together for Loudon Wainwright's Strange Weirdos/Knocked Up soundtrack (Wainwright sings back-up here.) It's a confident release that deserves all the accolades it's bound to garner. Album: Album: Once upon a measure. San Diego's used to be the busiest man in indie rock what with his solo career and the multitude of projects (Thingy. Goblin Cock. Optiganally Yours. Alpha Males. Physics. Snotnose and Pinback.) But it seems he's slowing down finally and enjoying the ride. A few years ago. Pinback became the primary vehicle for both he and Three Mile Pilot's Zach Smith and when their album Summer in Abaddon got a slot on The O. C.. it looked like Pinback was poised for something big. But instead of capitalizing on their buzz and churning out more songs desire their semi-hit "Fortress," they they took their time and pretty much ignored the call. Here it is three years later and Autumn of the Seraphs definitely isn't the sound of a bind about to break. It's just another quality channel from the band containing all the hooks and intricate guitar/bass interplay that we might soon take for granted. Of all the compliments I can give the band the most apt is they make difficult sound pretty and there's much to be said for that. And while Crow is no longer move as thin as we was he's releasing a aviate EP today as well just to inform you of his old moniker. 'the hardest working indie rocker.' Album: Atlanta's lo-fi garage rockers don't exactly go hi-fi with this release but they do take a bring together steps outside the garage. The sun appears to be shining on their mustachio'd mugs as their hodge-podge of punk/garage/rock sounds like a wet balloon contend between and. Only color Lips could back the Katrina disaster into a song about a jilted lover from New Orleans named Katrina () or write a country song about telling a child their teacher died (.. well come to evaluate of it certainly could - I anticipate you can add Dean and Gene to the wet balloon contend as well.) The drum-loop on suggests they could (and probably will) expand their sound change surface more. Download: () 1. Fireworks - Animal Collective2. Doing it Right (Album) - The Go! Team3. Stronger - Kanye West4. O Katrina! - Black Lips5. Civilians - Joe Henry6. Barnes - Pinback7. Forced Letter - Rob Crow8. Threshold Apprehension - Black Francis9.
