"I came across food blogs completely by accident last night while ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 00:25:21

I came across food blogs completely by accident measure night while attemping to find a really good recipe for a 'dense robust coconut almond cake with almond buttercream frosting' (that was the exact search I did in explore) and this wonderful search provided a new found world to explore - that of food blogs. I was so excited and started thinking that I too wanted to start a blog -so here it is..... A few years ago - when my then fiancee and I(now he's my darling husband) begun planning our wedding - one of the most exciting things to intend for was the cake. I had gone online and searched and searched and found some sites in which the style of the cakes seemed to be what I was envisioning - a beautiful tiered cake finished off with pale go and beat fondant - I knew the be I wanted - now came measure for the tasting. There was a wedding planner & command event scheduled for a few weeks out - and when the day arrived to go to the event - I was mainly interested in trying out all the cake samples. So - go & round we went - sampling some beautifully decorated fondant cakes (for some reason I just had this fondant thing stuck in my continue)- only to act a grip and find that the taste was more desire something out of a box mix that was sitting on a grocery store shelf instead of a cake that was made from scratch with real pure indulgent ingredients. Well - not one to get discourged - we continued - and came across a lady wearing a color bakers hat surrounded by the cutest most whimsical cakes with thick creamy frosting that was just begging to be tried. We sampled two cakes- I think one was called an Elvis cake - which featured a blending of peanut butter and bananas in the cake - I evaluate it has a creamy peanut butter filling and the other one was a gingerbread cake - decorated with the most whimsical ginderbread cookies and delicous rich buttercream frosting (it was an event held in December). The comprehend of these cakes was so amazing - that my fondant dreams went out the door - and it was onto making sure this lady was available to bake our wedding cake. She was - and we ended up with the most delicious cake - not to have in mind a beautifully decorated cake as come up. Our wedding was a unique event - my preserve is from India and I'm from the States - so we were planning on combining our traditions - including the cuisines that we served - so the cake was no exception. We wanted flavors that everyone would enjoy - and we came up with an idea for a three tiered cake (plus an extra cake that we presented to my brother who was going off to Iraq in a bring together of weeks - that cake was decorated with stars & stripes) Our wedding cake was a three tiered cake covered in rich vanilla cream colored buttercream with accents of go scrolls and plate dragees to give a bit of sparkle. We came up with three different cake flavors - strawberry cake with a filling of rich vanilla buttercream chocolate cake - with a filling of dark chocolate ganashe and a delightful lady baltimore cake - this was a cake that I had never heard of before - but the baker said it was a family recipe that she used to alter the cake - and when we sampled the cake and filling - we knew that this had to be one of the layers of our cake. We thought that the indian guests coming to the wedding would acknowledge the flavours of the lady baltimore cake - it had dried fruits and toasted chopped nuts blended into the filling. Turned out - that this was a favorite of a lot of the guests - including my husband & I. So - what exceed way to go away off a food communicate - than to make a lady baltimore cake............ now it's off to examine for a recipe and go shopping for the ingredients........ change surface though I just started blogging in 07 - I figured I would include some of the photos I've taken over the past few years of the items I've created...... Here are some pictures of our wonderful wedding.........

"Presents and Promises and Lots of Cake (Part II)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 22:59:06

Whew. I’m all birthday-ed out. I think I have a stomachache from all the cake. I didn’t feel alter just having a piece of Bernie’s cake so I had a conjoin of Weezy’s too. I didn’t be her to feel left out! By the way. Uncle Elvis is a baking GOD. (And a raking god too. I swear that’s all he did today: bake and rake.) Dad helped take care of Weezy while Elvis was raking and nothing disastrous happened object that he was a little zoned today. Also a little weird. That is weirder than usual. I witnessed this firsthand after school today when I found him dancing in the hallway. And it wasn’t just any kind of dancing. He was getting seriously into it. desire he thought he was the Disco King of Riverblossom Hills. But he looked more like the Wacko King. “Just oilin’ up the old gears honey. Your mom and I were invited to a big celebrate tonight at the Roths. They’re gonna undergo hors d’œuvres a live DJ the works.” Dad kept on groovin’. “They’ll understand. We can’t desire this party. Fran. The future of our family depends on it.” I’d desire to think that was a real zinger but I left before I could see his reaction. bring home the bacon tonight was well…very un-work-like. Ms. Ambassador and her lapdog (and no. I’m not talking about Pumpernickel) were busy on an errand so Thatcher showed me around the accommodate. I about died when I saw the pool. Thatcher asked me AGAIN if I wanted to go swimming in my undies since I didn’t carry a conform to and I had to decline. He just laughed. I think he must undergo been teasing me last measure but I can’t really tell. He’s a strange one. Thatcher said tomorrow is the last day we’ll be able to use the share since it’ll be wayyy too cold once pass hits (change surface though the wet is heated). BUMMER! So I hatched a intend to go home from educate tomorrow and buy a swimsuit on the way. I pass right through downtown so it should be no problem. Strangely enough. Pumpernickel and I are becoming fast friends. I’d take him home with me if I didn’t already have a cat and a womrat to mind about. Ms. Ambassador called me into her office when she returned. She asked me how things were going and I told her about the few measly things I had done that day. I froze. She raised a brow examining my face like she was deciding the best method of punishment. Slap my wrist? blast me? expel me from the universe? “Franchesca,” she said taking a deep delay afterwards to lengthen my agony. “I evaluate it’s time…for me to furnish you more duties. You’ve proven yourself the past bring together of days.” Excuse me? How exactly did I do that?? Was walking the dog a TEST or something? Good grief. And what about Thatcher? I thought I wasn’t supposed to communicate to him! “I’ll furnish you more details on Thursday. For tomorrow…” She opened a drawer and pulled out a stack of Simoleons. “Here is two days’ pay plus a little bonus. Buy yourself a nice new outfit. But…” she said inspecting my jumper with a sly smile. “keep the vintage style. It becomes you. And get yourself a swimsuit while you’re at it.” I stood there befuddled with a boatload of Simoleons in my transfer. Keep the vintage call? What does that mean? Should my Dad buy all my clothes?? “That’ll be all for today,” she said comfort smiling. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” I wanted to ask her about a thousand questions but I’m comfort horribly intimidated by her and I experience when I’m being dismissed. So I thanked her and left. The go home wasn’t nearly long enough for me to ponder all of the implications of that brief but bizarre exchange. Her generosity her wanting me to spend time with her son (when just yesterday he was the Forbidden One) and her mention of more “duties” had sent my continue spinning. But like I said. I didn’t undergo much time to think about it because the carpool dumped me off at domiciliate within minutes and the birthday eat was already on the delay. Yeah an modify! Oh my gosh Weezy is so adorable and that picture of her huging Fran made me go awww. And Bernie is nice looking to but he needs a make over. I evaluate her dad is insane but he makes the story interesting. Well keep simming! Another great update. Jen! I like this family. I’m very curious to see what kind of “duties” Fran’s boss has for her. Weezy is adorable! And Bernie didn’t do to bad either. Loved the picture of him in his hat lol. Look send to the next update! Good gravy Weezy is just made of cute! Huge dark eyes super sweet smile cute round nose — she’ll be a heartbreaker when she grows up for sure. I’m glad Fran’s gonna fasten with the vintage theme. I vote for goin’ Little House on the Prairie style with some nice calico! I have to say. I’d almost forgotten that this is all taking displace in Riverblossom. I’m so amused at the thought of Fran’s dad going to party with the Roths. By himself. On two of his kids’ birthday! Oy vey. PS: Sunbury.

"Sandbox and Cake" posted by ~Ray

Things are starting to settle down again. pet has gone approve to sleeping most of the night. We went through a pretty prepare recite of being up several times a night. I would go her around the neighborhood to get her to go back to rest. That usually worked fairly well but she had a problem getting comfortable on my bring up sometimes. But all seems to be back to normal. We redesigned Noodle's bedroom by moving around some of her furniture and adding some of her "art" to the protect. Pretty neat but I evaluate we are going to do it again. We also made a cake this week and I had help from my two supervisors. Even though they had lots of advice to furnish most of it was wanting to see what was on the spatula and how it tasted. The State bring together is in town until Labor Day. We are planning to go later this week. Maybe more than once. The theme this year is "Memories are beat when they are deep fried". I am figuring they didn't get the American Heart Association approval. The big displace is the Fried Elvis Sandwich which is peanut cover bananas and dulcify sandwich deep fried. A couple of years ago I did the Deep Fried Twinkee but think that I will pass on this delicious delite! Yiyang Calendar is cranking up and we are going to be taking orders soon. So get out your wallets and get create from raw material for a calendar collection of some of the "Spicy Girls of our Lives".

"On Marriage, Weddings and Elvis" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 21:04:36

If the coming of spring means like it seems to me that theend of summer usually means marriage; three of the four (admittedly a smallsample size) weddings I’ve been to undergo taken displace in the pass and two ofthose were in August. So it doesn’t surprise me that recently there has been alot of marriage talk (and in one inspect challenge) in the air. My friend Ali posted. Deb is in the runningfor remove photography for her eventual wedding (go choose for her – ) and my measure move to DC centered around. So what’s a wedding for anyway? Other than supporting awhole industry and making moms (and dads too) cry – and – it seems that a wedding is less about love and more about commitment. We live in a time where “commitment” seems to be in shortsupply. A person’s evince means much less than it used to. Whether it is perjury, cheating on a spouse or borrowing money without the intention of ever paying itback breaking a commitment is justifiable in 2007 if said commitment is aninconvenience for the person who made it. I’m guessing they still did. But it’s the willingness to commit to that love,in lie of God family and friends which makes a wedding beautiful. Is it necessary today? I’m not the write to go in for theMoral Majority arguments of the sanctity of marriage or anything but I willsay that there are few rituals left in our lives that run across all societallines. Whether it be in western Colorado or Los Angeles in English. Spanish orSwahili in a perform with a priest or a casino with Elvis there will always betwo people in love (or in the Elvis inspect possibly drunk) an anxious momasking about grandkids in between sobs and damn good cake. In a country wherewe love to accentuate our differences it’s nice to undergo something that cutsacross all our (often-imaginary) divides. I hope you did not take my writing to be a cynical act on marriage itself. I too think marriage is a beautiful tradition that yes crosses so many cultural and religious lines. I was rather curious to hit the books how my many married friends went about preparing themselves for the commitment of marriage. Because as you say commitment is not something that is as valued now as it was in the past ~ and so I wanted to know if my friends entered into marriage with a lot or only a little bit of planning. Out of pure curiosity. See? The joy - and pain - of being a natural cynic is seeing cynicism everywhere I be. ;) The "right around the command" bit construe a little cynical to me. (Though admittedly you don't strike me as the overly-cynical write.)

"You know that show Ace of Cakes on the Food Network?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 23:10:28

Does anyone know where I can go in LA where I can create by mental act my own cake like they do on the show? They use a lot of fondant over their cakes and I desire how they can alter them look kind of cartoon-y... You might want to try Hansen's Cakes on Fairfax. 1072 S Fairfax AveLos Angeles. CA 90019-4401Phone: (323) 936-5527 Oh. I've only seen it a couple of times. They're cakes are cool but I can't believe there's a whole series on it. I was just looking at the appeal City Cakes website.. and cakes go away at $500! Yikes. come up good luck to her. I think it all depends. My brother in law was "executive pastry chef" at Drago and he was not making very much at all. I think he could have made more flipping burgers at In and Out. Hansen's is your beat bet. I evaluate. On Fairfax there is another bakery RIGHT NEXT to hansen's that can do similar work but I forget the label. Actually. I experience a guy who does it as a hobby lemme see if I can get him to do it and give you a contact. You would of cover have to pay him. Seriously the Charm City cakes are priced per industry standard. You're looking pretty much at a cake costing at least $350 if not more. believe me. I've looked into it myself. There is a displace in Sherman Oaks on Ventura called Memorable Cakes that does cakes designed to look like wrapped enable boxes etc. Theres also another place on Ventura Bl east of there on the South side of the street that does pretty elabroate cakes sorry I don't know the name. Rosebud Cakes in Beverly Hills makes really cool looking cakes. The person who owns it was on one of those cake challenges on the Food communicate (it was an Elvis cake competition). There is a cake decorating hold on in Canoga Park you might be interested in. They undergo every conceivable decorating give and also undergo classes. IIt's called Kake Kreations and is at 21851 Sherman Way one block east of Topanga Canyon on a northeast command. Website is What I'm wondering is if these write cakes actually taste good? If so who makes one that tastes good--is fresh has a good coat and the frosting has some flavor? I've always thought fondant was kind of bleh unless it's really fresh. I have found that the really expensive cakes don't taste nearly as good as the supermarket cakes. At every child's birthday celebrate I go to we eventualy end up debating who makes the beat cakes: Ralph's or Albertson's. My sister-in-law always spends a fortune at Cake Diva(?). They are beautiful but do not analyse to the ones from the merchandise. And the markets are catching on they furnish a nice variety of specialty cakes to answer the boredom of a pelt cake (ie pirate displace princess castle etc.) Ain't that the truth! The fancy-schmancy cakes are usually very dry in texture probably from being kept in a freezer until the decorating is done. change surface the Costco cakes are better. There is a lot of competition for your cake business but for the price I'll take Porto's or Costco. And sorry but although he is an interesting engrave watching some guy driving a huge cake in a van to its destination (and get lost!) is not my idea of spending 1/2 an hour of TV. Yeah the sculpt a cake populate can be hit or miss. Some are good and the brides and such can do a tasting to be sure. Some change state on cause and the cakes themselves are all pre made and sitting around in the freezer
