Julie and I and some friends of ours headed to Vegas this pass. The precipitating event was the Jimmy Buffett “Bama blow” concert at the MGM Grand Arena Saturday night. We stayed at the MGM Grand itself which made getting to the concert that much simpler. "Yes I am a pirate. 200 years too late. The cannons don't thunder there's nothing to steal. Someone dressed in a maids furnish looked like they were trying to end into our room so I chased her off. At 6:45am on the day of our pip back there was this lone vampire just getting back in and he definitely looked like the living dead. The food was amazing. We tried to act the dining casual but two meals stood out. We went to a place called "Corsa Cucina" at Wynne's and had a Wild Mushrooms pizza made from mushroom puree robiola cease and white truffle oil some Mozzarella di Bufala made from marinated heirloom tomatoes basil balsamic extra virgin olive oil and change integrity a huge transfer cut Kurobuta Pork Chop with roasted butternut squash raisins and apples. Viva Las Vegas is just plain fun. Not taking itself seriously this vibrant movie from 1964 is probably the beat of the Elvis films. Paired with co-star. Ann-Margaret they sing and dance their way across bright colorful scenes and atop a paper-thin plot. Elvis plays Lucky Jackson a wanna-be race car driver who's determined to raise the money needed to enter the big race in Las Vegas. Ann-Margaret plays Rusty Martin the swimming instructor at the hotel where Lucky is waiting tables. Soon sparks fly and Lucky sings his way into Rusty's heart and into the big car go. In a word the on-screen chemistry between Elvis and Ann is infectious. Viva Las Vegas has a vibe that radiates joy and happiness. This is a true feel-good movie without being schmaltzy or overly poignant. The bright colorful lighting effects create a visually stunning environment for Elvis and Ann to strut wiggle and shake and let's not mince words here. Ann-Margaret shakes it for everything she's got. When you're paired with Elvis you've got to give it all or his on-screen magnetism will simply crowd you out. In Viva Las Vegas. Elvis has met his match with Ann-Margaret as she comes close to stealing the show. Only her “just-adequate” singing chops color in comparison to the silky smooth tones of Elvis Aaron Presley. There are some memorable musical numbers in Viva Las Vegas including the ubiquitous theme song. Ann gets a aviate which was rare for an Elvis movie and the duet between the two is delightful. Despite the fun and games there is one big problem with Viva Las Vegas: at the conclusion with everyone happy the film screeches to a jarring halt. If only they could have fleshed out the ending for another three or four minutes. I would undergo been wholly satisfied by this romantic-comedy romp.
