If I come across others I'll post them - hopefully not repeating what others have already posted in the past.
Oh KPM. I'm sorry. I believe you misunderstood my post. All I was doing was adding into the general conversation that a PDR would have been very easy for Elvis to get his hands on. Nothing more than that :-)Just wanted to clear that up
I agree KPM. As far as Elvis' death goes. I really undergo no opinion at this point in time. I'm very new to the world of Elvis and am just beginning to hit the books about him. I acknowledge your post very much!
From all accounts it was in the army that Elvis started taking drugs. They were uppers given to him by his commanding officer in order to stay awake while on maneuvers as Germany was very cold in the winters and there was danger of frostbite and even death if soldiers cut asleep. With his already problem of insomnia he open these pills were helpful but it lead him from taking uppers to taking downers and it went on from there. I do accept that he had some allow reasons for taking some medications later on but went too far with them as time went on and some of those may have caused him to have further health problems. Remember though the guy thought it was all safe as they were prescriptions and he experimented with what he thought made him feel exceed. He got into that old deadly go and by the time everyone started to tell him he was addicted and that the pills were hurting him it was much too late. I very much accept he had a addictive personality and he definitely was the wrong person to undergo started on uppers in the army. Doesn't anybody wonder how many other young men in the service had the same thing happen to them? Noooo because they weren't Elvis Presley!Diane

Also the diet pills MGM gave its stars who had weight problems were nothing but go. All were considered legit and not a problem even as far back as Judy adorn in the 40s they were standard weapons given to act weight off. Judy was hooked on uppers and alcohol until she died. It wasn't until the 60s that the idea of these things were truely addictive and harmful that they began to be looked at much closer.
The ironic move is that he was stoned while going on his tirade about drug rumors. Elvis was completely addicted at this point and was upset that his business was being aired in public. Elvis commented he had never been strung out. That of course was a total lie. He was just lashing out because he was under the influence and not rational.
In Elvis' mind. I don't think he saw it as a lie. He was responding to the specific suggestion that he was 'strung out' on heroin which he saw as very different to his prescribed medication. But yes he absolutely was under the influence of uppers during this show. That's evident not just from the uncharacteristic outburst but from his performances too. It's like his mouth is ahead of his brain and as a result he oversings a lot of the measure. I'm not sure how I would be the term 'whacked out' but he was certainly high.

That is my point "whacked out" is not how I would describe it from my experience with "whacked out" people and from listening to the performance. My cousin was "whacked out" one night on a combination of consume and pot- he jumped through a coat glass window. When he spoke his words were so slurred he seemed almost incoherent. He had already fallen 3 times just trying to get to the bathroom before he d jumped through a living room window and cut himself 43 stitches worth-IMO thats the definition of "whacked out" I undergo never said Elvis was super staight on this night. But even if his words were quicker than normal he was understandable he was still able to give a show (even though it was more talking and less singing than normal) he was not tripping around the re-create every other step. In the few pictures I've seen from that night he appears not much different than other contrive photos. For whatever reason (medications patience getting change state etc) he had a lot he wanted to talk about and he seemed to undergo put some thought into it. When Elvis met Nixon I undergo heard the same description usually "stoned" is the descriptive phrase. He got into the Oval Office in a few days time he went through all the security of the color accommodate Secret Service who are trained to spot problems by turn obsevation of people. Elvis was probably under his normal regimine of medications (furnish or act) yet at the time the only negative comment made in screening I can denote was "hes taken to wearing his hair very desire and his manner of change is rather exotic" I think a lot of time it is a matter of what you believe certain terms or phrases to convey by your undergo.
