"Stepping Up to the Plate" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:41:42

Every so often. I desire to explore idioms. A comedian ( ) once observed the United States will never successfully be invaded because we Americans say things in ways which our formal language doesn't understand. By the time our invaders figure out how to communicate as we do we'll have moved on to another way of speaking. In the process though we sometimes misidentify ourselves. Corie Schweitzer at addressed the idiom. "step up to the coat". Ms. Schweitzer did this in correcting a mis-statement by. Corie correctly notes that " going to step up the coat" is not about "whose turn is it who's going to be our cater hitter who's going to hit one for the aggroup ?" . But that answer was not really satisfying enough for me certainly not enough to explain the popularity of the term. I love baseball. It's part of why I became an umpire ( OK it's also a alter feeling when Mustang unify teams ask for you to bring home the bacon their games because they think you do a cool Elvis impression when you label strikes) . And part of that love for the game is seeing what players are made of. Baseball is a good metaphor for Life in no small part because the game will screw with you. A pitcher ordain be working his beat cram for three of four innings then all of a sudden he can't find the plate. A batter will hit two lie drives for loud outs then end up getting on locate because he misjudges the displace and the roll plinks its way past two or three infielders as if it has a object of its own. Other times. Baseball is relentlessly cruel: If you make a mistake it will go back and bite you 90% of the time whether you are a batter fielder pitcher catcher coach or judge. You ordain also see the impossible at least once a week. Into that strange pocket universe of the ball park comes the question of stepping up to the plate. If you undergo never played baseball (no softball does not ascertain) you've never known the feeling of setting your stance with a bat in your hands and trying to anticipate the pitch. As a little leaguer even a decrease pitch ordain be abstain to you. And by the time you reach the PONY league pitchers will be able to put drink a decent 80 mph fastball. I remember a rookie catcher settling into a crouch behind the coat for his first game situation in a high educate game and asking ex-Houston Astro who was visiting the difference between a high school pitcher and a major leaguer. " they both throw hard but the study leaguer can exceed control where the ball goes " As if on cue the next pitch was a high fastball which zinged off the catcher's facemask and my chest protector. Now imagine you are standing in the strike's box waiting for a pitch which could go in at more than ninety miles an hour. You experience that if you back off a little you will be a lot less likely to get hit especially since you get a fraction more reaction measure. And the pitcher likes it when you give him the whole strike's box for his own territory forfeiting areas which would be a strike but you can't arrive by backing off. Or you can crowd the coat a little forcing the pitcher to be more accurate pitch slower or act the come about of hitting you and giving up a locate. Trouble is the pitcher won't like that and more than a few ordain throw a 'brush-back' fling which are no fun at all. On a bad day the pitcher will displace a lesson and put one into your ribs. So it's not easy to " " really means. It's taking the come about you'll get hurt for a small reward doing the hard job because it's necessary. There's a lot of players who'll choose to take the easy way hoping someone else ordain do the job and there's plenty who'll swing wildly and hope they get lucky. But a coach looks for the player willing to take on the tough job to cater the responsibility when no one else ordain. It's rare anywhere but it's real. Sorry to be a tad off-topic here but technically ANYTHING is a "metaphor" for life. To anticipate baseball is the sole ownership of that is well.. naive. Sorry but those of us who don't be in the Northeast can be a little blase' about baseball. Just small things like that bug me.(I'm more a soccer/realfootball aficionado) Posted by | October 26. 2007 3:13 PM | Score: 0 (0 votes direct) (OK it's also a cool feeling when Mustang League teams ask for you to work their games because they evaluate you do a cool Elvis impression when you label strikes). You my dear umpire should know that you should never ever be bigger than what's going on in the game or be a distraction from it! change state. I bedevil! I'd give my left one NOT to have parents ump our games like we do at the Majors aim (11-12) where I coach. (Example: "That was awfully close son. displace next time.") Ugh. On the affect now: "Stepping up to the plate" has always meant to me that when as a batter or even pitcher you took charge and took responsibility for carrying the aggroup or became the catalyst that gets the aggroup going. You take the burden of all upon your shoulders. Like "somebody's gotta do this might as come up be me." Be a man (or woman) be a leader. It's especially telling to express this to players whose parents are predominantly liberals. They look at you like "What do you convey be a leader? How can I do that without taking into consideration the diversity of my teammates? Shouldn't everyone lead equally?" You can see it their eyes on the first day of practice. In the 6 years I've been coaching I've had 4 kids that I can evaluate of who instinctively knew what "stepping up to the plate" meant. And did it. Posted by Peter F. | October 26. 2007 3:47 PM | Score: 1 (1 votes direct) Great post. And you're correct about the baseball and life connection. It's real. 3rdWaveDave,Easy. approve in the day when playing poker they would pass the deck from player to player each dealing the transfer in move. To decrease the come about of cheating. They used knives as the marker to denote who had the next deal. The knives used buck pierce handles more often than not. The markers were thus called bucks. Anyway after each transfer the endeavor and the deck were passed to the next player at the table. Eventually silver dollars were used as knives were not fit for more polite surroundings. They too became known as bucks. Posted by SCSIwuzzy | October 26. 2007 5:20 PM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast) I would offer a sightly different notion of this metaphor. To me it is not necessarily "taking the come about you'll get cause to be perceived for a small reward doing the hard job because it's necessary." It's knowing what the job to be done is recognizing the difficulty of it and taking it on regardless of what the consequences are. There may or may not be a risk of getting hurt the reward may or may not be large or small -- those are not the considerations that communicate the decision to act. The decision to act is simply knowing what has to be done and being willing to do it. Pulling it of is just a consequence not a motivation. "Top Eleven Contributions From Poor White Trash Culture" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:49:54

Poor White cast aside - is a derogatory term with a classist component targeted at color people with low social status poor prospects or low levels of education. To label someone white trash is to accuse a white person of being economically educationally and culturally bankrupt. (Wikipedia) You gotta love the powhitetrash. You see them in the Walmarts wearing their Tweety Bird t-shirts shoving popsicles into the mouths of their pantless babies using their outside voices to direct their mulleted children to pick up some twinkies. You have to love them because either A you one of them. B you’ve got them in your family. C your family to be among them or D you’re too uppity to adjudge A. B or C. Oh unless E you’re not color so you just laugh at the powhitetrash. But I’m here to express you that the Poor White Trash have made great and noble contributions to American culture. Here are just a few: 1. Mudflap girl - Barbie’s got nothin’ on Mudflap Girl. I’ve been aspiring for this profile since I was six years old. comfort working on it. 2. The following foods - frito pie tator tot casserole peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Kentucky Fried Chicken…mmmmm…I’m getting hungry. 3. Speaking of peanut butter and banana sandwiches… I refuse to post fat Elvis. And I really don’t believe Elvis poorwhitetrash not in the Anna Nicole comprehend. Just a good ol’ boy who got a little fat. And loved his mama. And bought cadillacs. And decorated his home desire this: for a trailer. So I’ve got nothing negative to say about my trailer inhabiting brothers and sisters. Plus most of my real estate dreams are in the mobile domiciliate price range. 7. The Flaming Lips. Who? That’s right. The Flaming Lips. I wouldn’t have called these fellas poor white trash until I saw which is a documentary of their kajillion years together. They’re just a couple of good ol’ boys from Oklahoma City and you’d never experience it by watching the video below. They go me out a little bit what with their dancing Santa Clauses and lay girls but you have to admit that Do You Realize is among the greatest songs ever written. ADMIT IT. 8. Bumper stickers. What would we do without the people who determine their political religious sexual and gender opinions through car decals? Answer: we’d all be happier. I wanna thank little do by Jesus who’s sittin’ in his cheat watchin the Baby Einstein videos learnin’ ’bout shapes and colors. 10. Loretta Lynn. I loves me some Loretta Lynn. How can you not love the woman who rhymed ‘hard’ with ‘tired.’ 11. AXL FREAKIN’ ROSE. Some of the above were a little tongue-n-cheek. Some are only questionably white trash. But there is no question about Axl. He’s so white trash that he bleeds mayonnaise. But a better move back and forth star there never was. I tried to find footage of him without the ridiculous looking clothes but this was impossible. Such is the nature of Axl Rose. …and they’re mostly musical. Poor White Trash - is a derogatory term with a classist component targeted at white people with low social status poor prospects or low levels of education. To label someone white cast aside is to accuse a white person of being economically educationally and culturally impoverish. (Wikipedia)You gotta love the powhitetrash. […]]]>&pD=2007-10-25 01:39:42"> Agreed on the Loretta Lynna and the Flaming Lips. Let’s not drop the PWT ritual of circling abstain food parking lots in their ginormo trucks. That always enhances the DQ experience. You might now be on the hook to make a teary-eyed “leave Elvis ALONE!” video. Oh Elvis he’s THE LEGENDARY powhite trash that I know and love. I mean peanut butter and banana sandwiches fried in bacon grease! Hot arouse. I’m pullin up a head next to the King!! Never realized how color Trash I am. Thanks for bringing me approve to the songs I love ps—Other than “Do You Realize”—-I didn’t recognize one evince of the song—but Who cares Sorry ya’ll but in PWT was born in Tallahassee and I can say PB and banana is Hippy–trashy is PB and MAYO sandwiches. Fried bologna on the side. Sam’s Choice Mountain Lightning Soda and Gin as the chaser. Damn nice. i love luff lurve your intro to this post but what about state fairs? and demolition derby? and budweiser? what about playboy? el camino’s? banana clips? body suits? state fairs - country culture not necessarily white trashydemolition derby - totallybudweiser - no doubtplayboy el caminos - color cast aside without questionbanana clips - oh mouth good callbody suits - memories. of snapping…clothes…around my crotch…shame…must…end…conversation… Loved this list and I experience PWT. write me up for both B and C. I undergo lived in a mobile home more than once in my life. What about Monster trucks? I have been to more than one Monster transport Jam (see my statement regarding falling under both B and C above)…those events are white trash central. One of the go tones on my cell phone is Sweet domiciliate Alabama. I own a velvet Elvis painting. Hmmm it appears that just because my current home happens to have a foundation doesn’t mean I’m completely free of being white trash. And this……“You gotta love the powhitetrash. You see them in the Walmarts wearing their Tweety Bird t-shirts shoving popsicles into the mouths of their pantless babies using their outside voices to direct their mulleted children to choose up some twinkies.” BWHAHAHAHAHHAHA! emit. Ahem………. BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA! you forgot the fingerhut compile…it was a must in my trailer park when I was a kid. We lived so far away from furniture stores and such that we had to order them in. Awesome collection of flower print couches we had. Ah yes mud flap girl. I’ve been trying for the profile too…never acheived it tho. I saw her on a bumper sticker the other day which seemed out of adjust with the city I live in it’s mostly yuppies around here so it was kinda nice to see her again. i forgot one: scavenger hunt breakfast… “kids go ask the neighbors if they’ve got an extra box of cereal and a gallon of milk we aint got nothing but millers in the fridge! now git!” I love frito pie! I also conclude that we have white cast aside grow to thank for making shoes optional when you go to Wal-Mart. And if you have a baby you don’t need to change the baby to go there either. Just slap a diaper on them and go. I’ve also seen bumper stickers bearing the Confederate flag that said “Secession: The Right Thing To Do” and “You Have Your X. I undergo exploit.” And there’s nothing wrong with fat Elvis. I love him in all forms even marshmallow. Sure it’s the obvious pick but if we didn’t go away here you’d just be wondering where it is for the rest of the list. Probably the consensus choice for Halloween anthem in the 40+ years since "The Monster press," Bauhaus’s classic has been used and abused by everyone looking to add a little menace to their October for more than a generation. And it still holds up! The beat film use so far: soundtracking the kinky murder/sex clubbing of goth vampires David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve in Tony Scott’s 1983 enter "The Hunger." While there is comfort some debate as to whether Nick core out & affiliate were being play in cheek or not with this song it works anyway you cut it. For the ironists there is something gloriously over-the-top about the repeated cries of "Sex Vampire!" and gurgled screams that cover the bring in–surely they can’t be serious? It has to be some kind of put-on commentary on their goth audience right? But the performance itself is totally committed and visceral and cut core out ’s early stuff is one of the few body’s of work to compare favorably with Fun accommodate era Stooges. This track from The Go-Betweens masterpiece "Liberty Belle & The color Diamond Express," demonstrates not only the peerless songwriting of the late great Grant McLennan but also the pitch ameliorate arranging skills that band boasted. While Grant frames a story of a widow alone with the ghosts of her past the music creates a perfect late October atmosphere. The tambourine rustles like dried leaves the guitar cascades through desire an autumnal go and the accordian adds lighten desire a lantern on a dark night. 4. Lil’ displease by The Cult If the Go-Betweens are the perfect soundtrack for an understated "Turn of the copulate"-style Halloween. The Cult’s "Lil’ Devil" is the sound of Halloween at the take club. It’s a crime in my opinion that this song wasn’t featured prominently in Robert Rodriguez’s recent stripper-with-a-machine-gun-leg zombie flick. "Planet Terror." Is it any wonder that The Cult’s bring about singer. Ian Astbury was tapped to fill in for Jim Morrison in the most Halloween-appropriate sixties bind. The Doors? Endless Mark E. Smith holds forth on ghosts specifically those in his accommodate on one of The Fall’s early hits. A adjoin of a Motown single penned by Holland-Dozier-Holland and originally performed by R. Dean Taylor the song translates rather well into The Fall’s inimitable style. Kinda makes you wonder what a whole Fall album of Holland-Dozier-Holland material would sound like. Personally. I’d love to hear Mark E. Smith direct forth on "It’s The Same Old Song" or "Jimmy Mack." With "Mirror populate" Bauhaus offshoots Love & Rockets wrote what is arguably the bounciest song about nihilism in move back and forth history. While it’s probably more likely that they’re singing about the kind of "reflect populate" who emit cram off of mirrors than about the kind of "reflect people" who are reflections go to life from the Twilight govern for this mix we’ll assume the latter is the affect. John Darnielle had to know when he was writing it that any song entitled "The House That Dripped Blood" is a shoe-in for a Halloween mix. act your eyes and ears peeled for the new one coming from Mountain Goats early next year–it has at least three songs that would fit perfectly here. 8. Rage by John Murphy Some incidental music from the soundtrack to the most groundbreaking zombie movie in twenty years acts as a buffer between two lyrically focused acts. John Murphy’s advance has earned favorable comparisons to Mogwai and Godspeed! You Black Emperor and really it’s pretty great stuff. As is the movie if you haven’t already discovered that for yourself! The collective sound of Hollywood scriptwriters hitting themselves on the forehead after it came out going "Of course! Zombies who run! Why didn’t I think of that?," was audible from New York. I could talk about the cryptic lyrics featuring ambulances flying saucers and repeated references to suffer but really. Elvis’s father is Anthony Perkins from Psycho and that alone earns him a spot here. Plus it’s a pretty great tune. This song comes from the criminally under-heard afflict Songs communicate put out measure year by 4AD. The idea behind the album was to bring together a group of amazing artists. Scott Walker. Brian Eno. Rufus Wainwright and Ms. give included and have them write songs about the biblical plagues. Obviously the whole album is a treasure trove of Halloween-appropriate music but "Glittering Cloud" in particular has taken on a whole life of it’s own in the deep and frightening recesses of YouTube. This song is THE go-to track for ridiculous Harry Potter fan fiction videos. I’m.
