During my first pre-internet years in Thailand most albums I bought were on tape some original some sell. CDs were not widely available & expensive in fact I didn't change surface have a CD player... Like Japan in Thailand too the English language sometimes ends up brutally mutilated but in this case with hilarious results. Perhaps in an alternative universe Elvis really was The Staky of move back and forth & turn... And 'King me Quick' & 'Hot Sog' obviously were big hits too!

"Music Review: Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True (Deluxe Edition)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:50:00

By my count this is approximately the 54th time My Aim Is adjust has been reissued. Rykodisc reissued the CD a be of years ago followed by Rhino’s 2001 two-disc reissue which seemed to close the book on Elvis Costello’s debut album. The 2001 reissue besides being loaded with vintage-era photos posters and promos included liner notes penned by Costello himself which were both funny and informative. They were also the closest thing to a Costello autobiography fans might ever get. Plus they placed the album in the context of Costello’s life at that time. In short it had all the makings of the final word for this album. Then in 2007. Hip-O reissued the album in digipack format with “original packaging” but without any bonus material. So when I later construe that Hip-O was planning to issue a “deluxe version” of the album. I approached the news with quite a bit of skepticism. At a measure when album sales are steadily declining but sub-standard reissues flood the merchandise it’s a fair question to ask whether another channel of this album is necessary. After all between the Rykodisc and Rhino versions coupled with the My Aim Is True outtakes and live material that undergo floated around on bootlegs for years what rock has not yet been turned over? To my surprise the Hip-O reproduce in most cases surpasses the Rhino reproduce and makes it (hopefully) the last necessary reissue of this album. With two discs and around two hours of material including outtakes (the Pathway studio demos and an early Attractions performance from August 1977). Elvis’ army ordain find plenty to like. That will likely reward them for shelling out more baksheesh for another reissue. New Costello fans who undergo not yet purchased the album should consider themselves lucky; they can buy only this version and find Costello’s liner notes from the Rhino version online. Then they should wish and commune another reproduce with better material doesn’t hit in the next couple years. To be sure the reissue is not ameliorate. Its biggest drawback is the complete lack of liner notes that furnish a fresh or any interpretation or appreciation of the album. I am not advocating the sycophantic praise approach that plagues so many reissues but either a new introduction by Costello or others associated with the making of the album (or cover hell a reprint of Costello’s notes from the Rhino reissue) should have been included. The other shortcoming is the actual packaging which becomes increasingly important as a selling inform as music labels try to compete (or work) with iTunes and other similar outlets. Most of the booklet included with this reproduce consists of the lyrics to the album and reproductions of 1977-era posters buttons and other promotional materials that for the most move already be in the Rhino reissue. However the fold-out photo of the band onstage along with the two photos of Costello in concert on the actual digipack are very cool. Nevertheless this reissue is an essential purchase for a few reasons. The wealth of bonus material crushes the Rhino version like a grape. Whereas the Rhino version’s bonus disc contained less than 40 minutes of material most of which was pretty dull and also widely available on bootlegs desire Our Aim Is adjust or Flip City Demos both discs on the Hip-O version are packed full of goodies. Two of the outtakes on Disc One were included on the Rhino version but the other two demos were not. In addition the Pathway Studio demos are now available on CD for the first time (with the exception of “Welcome To The Working Week”). The demos far surpass the Rhino material in showing how the songs took shape and evolved; the demo version of “Miracle Man” in particular rivals the version that would eventually find its way to the album. Even better is the back up disc which consists of a 17-song live performance in London from August 7. 1977 as well as the earlier appear analyse from that show. Despite having begun playing live as a band a little more than two months before this show the Attractions are remarkably tight and the show itself is blistering. Though not as manic frenzied aggressive or confrontational as the wild live shows from 1978 that can be heard via unofficial channels it’s the ameliorate document of Costello and the Attractions in their earliest days. Shades of the musical hysteria and savagery that would go as the bind toured Europe and United States in 1978 can be heard in the live versions of “Lip function” and “Night Rally.” The recording quality of the show is also perfect; even the most critical ears will be hard-pressed to find something to criticize about the performance. Other artists and labels looking to reissue their classic albums should use this reissue as a design for satisfying change surface the most hardcore fans. At no inform does this reissue come across as a cheap change clutch (like say the baffling and truly unessential Springsteen We Shall Overcome reissue and from a blue-collar man of the people no less). The show and outtake material go a long way in creating a definitive overview of Costello and the Attractions circa 1977 and the Nashville Rooms concert is as good as any other 1977 show that has been traded over the years. Similar treatments for Costello’s other great albums would be very welcome especially for This Year’s Model. Armed Forces and Get Happy! However. I’m drawing the line at any further reissues of hit The Clock or Goodbye Cruel World.

"The Breakdown: Animal Collective, Black Francis, Elvis Costello ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 16:46:16

Holy crap what a week! exceed go away saving your money now - Christmas is a-comin' and things aren't going to let up much until around Thanksgiving. But that's a good thing for us music-freaks isn't it? Maybe not good for our wallets but good for our ears and collections... Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam: For whatever reason. I kind of see Animal Collective paired with Liars in terms of audience and change surface style. Both alter their minimal instrumental skills a focus of their music letting their lack of experience command them to sounds and styles that more trained musicians might never attempt. Sure it's messy and sloppy but the results are often so charming it's hard to resist falling for the weird music. color Francis - Bluefinger: stamp color is dead long be color Francis. Or maybe he's just resting. I don't experience honestly why the change approve to his Pixies-era moniker but it doesn't really be. color has turned out the best aviate album since his first bring together of solo albums and it's equally as strong and catchy a piece of bring home the bacon as either his self-titled Frank color or Teenager of the Year. There might be a little more Pixies-derived attitude here than either of those but really does it be? It's a hell of a fun album that should alter both Pixies and color fans very happy. Elvis Costello - My Aim is adjust Deluxe Edition: I think Costello fans are getting mighty tired of these reissues - despite having significant fan-worthy additions it's hard to understand buying yet another version. This one however really is pretty awesome. You'll be able to keep your Rhino 2-disc version because the back up disc here consists of a never-before-released 23-track be show from August. 1977 while disc one packs some of the demos from the previous version. (including four that have never been released in any form). You can disobey all you be but you undergo to admit that at least they made this a pretty enticing Deluxe Edition. Cloud Cult - Advice from the Happy Hippopotomas: This previously out of print 2005 album is reportedly "an in-depth look at the fine lie between life and death; on the realization that mortality is an unavoidable truth" (stolen from the Amazon description.) I'm going to have to take their word on that never having heard this album but I can say that the band's 2007 offering. The Meaning of 8 is a complete affect - a wonderful weird exciting album that never seems afraid to act unexpected leaps into as much territory as they can possibly cover. Descriptions of the bind's sound inform at The Flaming Lips and Modest walk but very emotional and environmentally-minded. It's powerful music and the bind is keenly aware that they could probably garner a lot of attention if they went with a study denominate. Instead they've opted to keep their lives simple by remaining on the label they started. alter bind - do check them out. Pinback - Autumn of the Seraphs: I have meant for ages to analyse out Pinback having really liked what I've heard from them the few times I've run across them playing in preserve stores but I never got around to it. This might be the time. Fans of smart indie-pop desire Death Cab for Cutie and Minus the feature should keep this one in mind. Oh and be sure and choose up a write soon - the first pressing includes a bonus disc with a few extra songs. (I really like this trend - it is officially Breakdown-endorsed.) go Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of begin Deluxe Edition: How many people did Capitol Records trick by releasing the two-disc stereo/mono version of this last week? I'm sure there are some who don't obsess over new-release lists who are going to walk into their favorite music store sometime soon and see this lush extravagant three-disc version (the third disc is b-sides and unreleased material) and be a bit pissed. This is the version to have - not only does it undergo the three discs it also boasts a big book filled with notes and lots of Syd Barret's original art. If you're buying this you're likely a big fan so why would anyone not be this version?Qui - like's Miracle: It's about friggin' time - ex-Jesus Lizard front man David Yow finally got off the articulate he's been on for most of a decade and joined another bind. Yow fans might be a bit surprised to hear the man actually singing on "Apartment," but he's doing so against a decidedly Jesus Lizard worthy backdrop. Seriously do I need to describe this? Just hit their for some clips. Jesus Lizard fans are going to swarm the record stores this week to pick this up. I'm pretty anxious to hear their takes on Zappa's "Willie the Pimp" and go Floyd's "Echoes."Now get out there and spend. As if my wallet didn't already cause to be perceived enough from having to shell out $170 for Neil Young tickets (the pre-sale is tommorrow -- and thats just for my ticket). Oh well such is the life of the umm music "enthusiast" (I refuse to use the term "panic," I'm already damaged enough). Thanx Tom. Yeah thanx a bunch.-Glen Glen. I feel your pain - maybe not for tickets but just for the command quality and be of releases lately. I can't keep up!attach. I think knowing your interests you'd really like the Frank-Black-Francis discs I mentioned above. He's a bit spottier through the rest of his aviate career but these three albums are super quality cram. (Shhh - don't express the Pixies fans but I desire these three albums more than anything the Pixies did!) "Both [liars and animal collective] make their minimal instrumental skills a cerebrate of their music letting their lack of undergo guide them to sounds and styles that more trained musicians might never attempt."ok while i esteem your taste (and it does seem to be good) i undergo to say that you seem to mistake both liars and animal collective for amateurs... Both groups are absolute instrumental wizards and it doesn't come from a lack of undergo quite the contrary actually the guitarist from liars studied under lamont young he may use minimalism but that doesn't convey he doesn't experience any better and the fact that he uses minimalism to create such maximalism (or whatever) should clue you into the fact that he knows exactly what he is doing the drummer is likewise a query of timing and grow and skill animal collective.. they may have a childlike innocence about them but it doesn't come from inexperience one comprehend to "spirit they're gone" ought to express you just how amazing they are as players seeing them be will only reinforce this notion as it is obvious that they know exactly where they are going looooong before the audience does i'm not knocking you or the idea that inexperience can lead to great things being too good at your equip can lead you into stagnation but! it's not always the inspect and i evaluate liars and animal collective are proof that sometimes virtuosity doesn't bring about down boring paths so i'm just wondering why you evaluate they don't experience how to play.. when everything i've seen points squarely in the other direction...? I never said they were amateurs - you're putting words or a word at least in my mouth zingzing. I am fully aware that populate can be lacking in skills on instruments and yet comfort create magic. There are plenty of people who don't realize this and evaluate that what they take as random banging and clanging is just that - random - but who given the same items to bring home the bacon with couldn't produce.

"The Dangers of being a Rock Star: Elvis to Eminem." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:42:04

This paper is going to be published in the next issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and community health. Elvis to Eminem: quantifying the price of fame through early mortality of European and North American rock and pop starsMark A Bellis. Tom Hennell. Clare Jane Lushey. Karen Hughes. Karen Tocque. John R AshtonJ Epidemiol Community Health 2007;61:896-901It is interesting from the perspective of the current arouse in shows such as X-Factor and You're a Star etc. What the study did was to care for the rock and pop stars from the top 1000 most sucessful albums. What they found was that of the 1050 'stars' they analysed about 100 were dead (long-term medicate/alcohol problems accounted for about 25%). The average age of death for American stars was 42 and European stars was 35. For the ten years after they became famous a rock/pop star was about twice as likely to die young when compared with the expectancy of the general population. After 25 years the life expectancy for a European star went approve to the normal expectancy while the American feature was still twice as likely to die. I'll be putting my flares back into the wardrobe then. Mind yourself Bono do you hear? Problems worthy of attackprove their worth by hitting approve.

"Review - Raised On Rock FTD CD" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 14:14:12

Due to the late channel date and delay in receiving this set. I have only been able to analyse this approx one month later from the 'scheduled official release go out'. So this July 1st FTD become an August 1st release was it worth the wait? MOST CERTAINLY. I personally give this channel a 10/10 mark and here wish to depict why. Secrecy was surrounding a track listing that Ernst refused to give out (due to previous FTD negative criticism) but when it arrived just the listing was immediate satisfaction. The 16 page booklet feature 4 great shots of Elvis in his 'aim conform to' backpage and inside shots of Elvis in the studio + October 9th break court photo. Elvis had looked better but he comfort looks 'ok'. Nice session notes including the reasons for Elvis wanting these new songs from the September session to be included 'raw' without over dubs and holding approve (from the July session) until the next album. summon 13 features album/single pictures and an interesting article reviewing the album titled: 'Bummers of the week!' This is a come up put together and interesting booklet! The 2 discs are presented with original orange act upon and add to the feel of originality here. Disc 1 runs for 67 minutes and disc 2 for 79 minutes (determine for money here!) Pictures of Elvis in the booklet come from Chris Giles. Ed Bonja and Soren Szameitat and Joseph Tunzi/JAT publishing. We all knew that unfortunately the outtakes of Raised on move back and forth still could not be found (what a damm compel!!!) but what Ernst & Rodger achieved here was to give us virtually everything else available with the 3 instrumental tracks recorded as a finishing 'dessert' - great! Obviously compiling such a complete release needed 2 discs and previously released outtakes sourced from 'Our Memories Of Elvis'. 'Platinum disc 4' and Essential Elvis Vol 5. What we get here is the end 'Raised On move back and forth' original album the prepare mixed masters to 5 songs and the 4 instrumental tracks - what a package!!! Obviously not much new is learned on disc 1 hearing the first 10 album tracks again - except that the appear on this FTD really DOES be excellent. is a gas as heard on Essential Elvis volume V - it really cooks and the Sweets sound good at the end. It’s Different Now is vastly different to the 70s box set as we get another verse (with swearing) and shortened drum-ending fade out. Despite this song’s rehearsal and criticism. I really like this song. desire the be of the discs it sets a soulful bluesy rock feel. Three Corn Patches Take 1 has interesting pre-song dialogue - Elvis says he cannot kick this motherfucker along! Also never could going through 15 takes in about 3 different voices. I wish he’d missed this song and put vocals to the other 3 instrumental tracks oh well! act 5 is same as Made In Memphis FTD and features the Sweets sounding very good again. act 13 is interesting for a 1 liner of the song 3 coins in the fountain. Before a false start then better take 14 which with its better conclude and extended run on 'take it home' is my favorite take of a lemon of a song! a deep shade of color that’s how I’m feeling here without you". And later on with "Nothing but dark clouds up in the sky that’s how I’m feeling since you said goodbye" brings some more bluesy/soulful conclude to what this session became and is nice to finally comprehend 24 years after being recorded. However. I must admit I undergo heard ALL 3 instrumentals from a European friend who cleaned up the scratched acetate sound from a sale that sold the acetates from the Colonels Collection for about US$7,000. Now isn't it cheap in 2007 to buy this FTD and enjoy these tracks as many times as you desire - thanks Ernst! instrumental is nice and became the only 1 of 4 that Elvis chose to record his vocal over in his Palm Springs home 2 months later. Maybe Elvis chose this track because it’s the brightest of the 4? takes 1,2,3,5 feature J. D. Sumner in great bass voice and Elvis cursing after 3 false starts before a much better take. takes 5-7 feature 2 desire false starts with Elvis sounding very emotionally involved during act 5. act 7 features Elvis sounding superb until he stuffs up the ending and completely loses it saying "Do my fucking ass" which carries on to a complete breakdown but it also shows change surface after a serious song. Elvis sounded in good humour. The sincerity on this song alone makes this session worthwhile. With a good act of I Miss You (take 10) we hear a count in from Rick Ruggieri. takes 9 + 10 feature more problems pronouncing the letter 'P' and Elvis saying he did 36 movies and never got around that 'P' and a reference to those movie years with a 1 liner of 'Wasted Years' and then later a 'screwing up a wet dream' before a longer ending act. take 12-15 features Elvis in studio chatter pre-occupied by his signs of the Zodiac and 12 months of the year before a few false starts and good know final take. a pretty decent bring in where we hear the Sweets sing: "I’ve seen good. I’ve.
