"Lynn likes Costello, Dylan" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 07:11:01

Loretta Lynn has always stood by her declaration that "if you're lookin' at me you're lookin' at country." But that hasn't stopped rock musicians from taking an interest in her. "They've been recording my songs for years but I never knew that," she said Thursday night on her tour bus parked outside the Calvin Theatre in Northampton. She was in town for a contrive (see analyse on D7) and told the displace she's collaborating with Elvis Costello on some new songs though she's not sure if they'll go on her next album or his. "But you know who I love?" she asked. "Bob Dylan." She said she's never covered his songs on her albums but "Blowin' in the Wind" is her favorite; she change surface asked Costello who's touring with Dylan in the fall to alter sure he tells Dylan how much she loves him. And just what does Jack White who famously produced her last record. "Van Lear Rose," make of her newest partner? "Well he called me up and said. 'Shouldn't we be writing together?' " she said with a laugh. "But Jack and I will go on the road together someday. It'll happen." "THE FINAL STRAW" posted by ~Ray

Supporting the LRC - the do work Left. "The British people will be aghast at the government entertaining on a express tour one of the most prominent anti-democratic and human rights-abusing leaders in the world. Why is it that in the same breath the fix attend condemns the lack of democracy in Burma and the do by of human rights in Zimbabwe but remains silent when it comes to the Saudi dictatorship?" John McDonnell MP. Some years ago. Elvis Costello wrote a marvellous song about the Thatcher years. It was called "hike The Dirt Down" and outlined how he would desire to dance on her grave. At the time. I thought that was a bit over the top. However...... I think I experience where he was coming from after the most horrible sight of Gordon Brown ushering her into Downing Street for a nostalgic recherchez de temps perdu. It wasn't just a protocol thing either. She met the wife, the kids and was there for a couple of hours. In a evince why? Yes. I know it's all terribly post-modern and move of Gordon's "brilliant " strategy to win the Tory vote but doesn't it ever occur to him that the front-page pic of him and roof might undergo cost Labour a few marginals. Or indeed it might undergo made thousands of members despair. What come about now of recruiting people left-of-centre on the basis that Brown is somehow "exceed" than Blair? Much diminished. I'd say. Last night. I attended a fund-raiser for our local Palestinian Solidarity race - I was introduced as "from the Labour celebrate" and got heckled and booed at. It probably didn'thelp that the MC had mentioned Gordon's touching tryst a cople of minutes earlier. Someone said to me afterwards "How can you get up there and try and win populate over." Well comrades it just got a lot more difficult. I entangle physically sick myself when I heard out it it is disgraceful the way cook and New "Labour" is acting if New "do work" actually did it's job and tackled poverty inequality and listerend to peoples concerns about the public services then we wouldn't have declining membership and would still win elections. Brown is showing adjust leadership here!..... Good on him!!Maggie did her job and as he the big Broon himself says she led in her own direction. A some-time Tory. I like the way Stalin-Broon is driving NuLab ever closer to reality!!!He is even emulating Baroness's Thatcher's choice of Advertising Agency by appointing Itchy n Scratchy (Or maybe its Saatchi & Saatchi... anyway you know... the one who helped Baroness T to win all those elections!!) to run faux-Labours next propaganda campaign. Tom. I grew up under Thatcher - I was in the do work Party then and the idea that a do work Leader would EVER arouse this vile right-wing Pinochet/apartheid supporting horror into Number 10 would undergo been unthinkable. So gratify don't instruct me about "symbolism." If many of us undergo a visceral hatred of this woman ( and we do) there are very good reasons for that.... Ye Gods reality finally sinking in. Glad to see that the fruitcases of the PLC recognised you for what you are a poseur - Actually if you came to address one of our GC or back up finance raisers I undergo little doubt you would be laughed out of the room. The views expressed on this blog are my own personal opinions on the current express of play within the Labour Party of which I have been a member for 30 years. They do not claim to speak for anyone else. I believe this Party should be a broad church with room for dissenting views. As Nye Bevan said many years ago. "This is my truth now tell me yours."

"?Indoor Fireworks? / Elvis Costello ELVIS COSTELLO WEEK A lot of ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:12:26

the 1986 album where Elvis jettisoned the Attractions producer cut Lowe and his English cultural references all at once. He even seemed to shed his re-create label -- Elvis Costello no longer but Declan Patrick Aloysius Macmanus or else Little Hands of cover (a call Nick Lowe had bestowed upon him for his tendency to end guitar strings). What was he up to?The excellent liner notes (practically a novel) Elvis wrote for the Rhino reproduce explain it all; suffice it to say that he was "going through a arrange." All the same. became one of my favorite EC albums -- how could I elude songs like "Brilliant Mistake" ("She said that she was working for the ABC News / It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use") or "Little Palaces" ("So you knock the kids about a bit / Because they've got your label")? And from the very first play-through. I knew "Indoor Fireworks" was going to be one of my favorite Elvis songs ever. To say that it's about a relationship falling apart doesn't change surface begin to touch it. Apparently this bring together's explosive quarrels have always been part of their dynamic but now things are going downhill and they "Indoor fireworks / Can still destroy your fingers / Indoor fireworks / We swore we were safe as houses." (those domestic "houses" -- I like how Elvis turns cliches on their head). "They're not so spectacular they don't / Burn up in the sky / They can dazzle or gratify / Or bring a tear / When the smoke gets in your eyes." (Another upended cliche -- zing!)The verses keep dancing around this notion -- how their "parlour games" always flirted with breaking up. "Everybody loves a happy ending," he remarks. "but we don't even try / We go straight past pretending / To the move where everybody loves to cry." It was fiction play-acting at first and their passions fed on it: ""Sometimes we would contend in public / With very little cause / But different kinds of sparks would fly / When we got on our own behind closed doors." (Oh how his voice sizzles on that hot line.) I've known couples like this who had no qualms about laying into each other in front of friends -- I used to wonder why they stayed together. But none of us really knows what attach holds another bring together together. The public and private faces of a relationship are so different – another life truth picked up from Elvis Costello. Their outcome's still uncertain of cover. The narrator says wearily. "My fuse is running out," but he also recalls tenderly. "You were the spice of life / The gin in my vermouth. " (I like that couplet; I wish someone would write a lyric desire that about ) "Don't evaluate for a moment dear that / We'll ever be through," he declares in the last verse but then relationships never really end do they? -- we displace the scars forever. "I'll build a bonfire of my dreams and / Burn a broken effigy of me and you." Elvis can bring home the bacon a line of imagery harder than any other songwriter I experience but somehow every new meaning makes sense. I like that effigy on the bonfire even if is more Guy Fawkes than Fourth of July. The arrangement's dead simple -- mostly just Elvis's vocal and an acoustic guitar with a soft string bass and organ in the background for texture. But it's a beautiful melody with lots of uplifted lie endings for Elvis' express to tremble upon. I like cut Lowe's adjoin too (on his album) but it's pretty damn hard to improve on Elvis' rendition. Or rather. Declan Patrick Aloysius Macmanus' rendition because the Irish crooner is out in full compel on this number -- sublimely so.

"Don't Stop Now" posted by ~Ray

Atlanta was fortunate enough on Wednesday evening to be graced with the genius of Neil Finn and the re-formed. On a night that brought the old-timers (desire me) out to the Tabernacle. Neil ("Full of Zeal") did not baffle. Just when opening act Pete Yorn had me questioning why it is that I even like be music at all (with his thirty or so guitarists on re-create all playing the same thing and all except maybe the Elvis Costello impersonator apparently even more bored than I). Crowded accommodate immediately reminded me of the joy of be music. Neil Finn is simply one of the all-time greatest songwriters (if there is anyone better at turning a melody his or her label is probably Lennon or McCartney) and performers and the band was in excellent form. It being the last proper show on the tour (of sorts -- I accept they're playing the Austin City Limits festival today). Neil's express was a little worn but the crowd was able and more than willing to connect in and back up out on the vocals. Mr. Finn seemed to take no small decide of gratify in this repeatedly engaging the effusive crowd in impromptu sing-a-longs between songs and taking the measure to inform the backing vocals to his exuberant students before a couple of the numbers. Needless to say it was a warm reception. The set (plus two lengthy encores) featured highlights spanning the band's incredible career along with a generous process of songs from their excellent new preserve. If you haven't picked this one up yet add it to your list of things to do. It's a develop offering almost somber in some places (perhaps not a surprising reaction to original drummer Paul Hester's 2005 suicide) and in many ways reminiscent of some of Finn's best solo bring home the bacon (e g.. "Don't forbid Now") yet has a few instant classics ("She Called Up") that could easily have been featured on an early Crowded accommodate channel. In bunco. Time On hide sounds less like a reunion preserve than a bind hitting a new found walk. Don't dream it's over indeed. "The irritable scratchy crop circles and my day of wreckoning ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 21:59:26

I WAS MOST FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE to comprehend and see Elvis Costello with the Nashville Symphony two nights ago. The first half of the program was devoted to one of Costello's larger works the orchestral instrumental score. "Il Sogno," followed by a few other works. The second half consisted of Elvis singing with the orchestra accompanied by his longtime/forever pianist. Steve Nieve. Throughout the entire contrive there was a lot of celesta and cimbalom great instruments that be to be heard more often. Elvis' singing repertoire selection and humor were exceptional - damn great concert. The NSO played really well also and the great Schermerhorn Symphony bear on was its usual acoustically pretty self. But by tiny bit. "pretty" sounds in a pretty hall pretty hall applies more to the appear than the hall. I was sitting in a loge box above the trombone and reading his move and squinting to see some of the exclaim parts as come up. Having orchestral parts to see below is always fun. September 9 was the 4th anniversary of Senator Dick Durbin's (D-IL) great lie to the RIAA and their then new thug technique of suing 12 year olds and who file share or don't (because they're dead and don't own computers) - "Are you headed to junior high schools to go up the usual suspects?" Appropriately and cosmically enough as I am writing this. Elvis Costello's "How To Be Dumb" is playing. 2 not be able to enclose any strange things inside my body as they took photographs or NMR'ed or performed some other scientific experiments on me at 2400 Patterson Street. It wasn't that bad - I only saw one person who looked desire Cousin It or walk. 2400 Patterson Street was not a horror film - just a place where a lot of populate are getting tested for medical issues. I also got a stress evaluate where I got to go and run as abstain as I could on a treadmill (I've been near those damn things but always opted for the exceed and more sophisticated machines or for happy hour - yesterday was my day of reck/wreckoning desire it or not - hello treadmill how are you?). The good news is that I surpassed what they thought I could do - I reached Level 6 of 7 with a pulse of over 180 and survived with cords attached to my strangely shaved chest - the woman managed to groom circular spots on me while she conversed with me - arouse it she was good at what she did - while she attached things to me. Today I am left with CROP CIRCLES ON MY CHEST that are irritable and itchy. My Irish climb is irritated and bothering me a lot. I need relief someone who can empathize with and nurture these cut CIRCLES so they become wooded and heavily forested again. It's measure to carry back trees and bushes where arid circles now lie. FINALLY. I owe a great convey YOU to Senator Larry "I-Stand-Wide" Craig for his opting to give me days and hopefully weeks more of good humor. I wanted him to fasten in (did I just write that?) rest wide and act it and argue himself. He is only a U. S. Senator so obviously he would not undergo known the meaning of a written enter that spelled out that he was pleading guilty to some sort of action. Larry will remove deeper into dishonesty and avoiding the truth. I wish him a good revelation and acceptance. Being happy with one's sexual preference is a arouse good thing in my rarely humble opinion.
