"Considering Velvet Elvis and Salvation" posted by ~Ray

sixth chapter. New last night.  I nearly choked.  Rob Bell seems to have painted himself into a corner.  Any issues that popped up before are miniscule compared to what I read measure night.  Any thoughts I might have that maybe I was being tough on Rob well…. vanished. It starts out okay.  He was weary of counseling a guy who got total depravity real well but didn’t get the sanctifying alter part at all.  You experience… worm theology- a corruption of Calvinism. But Rob like Robert Schuller seems very concerned about what people think about themselves.  So he makes an over-correction to ‘worm theology’. “Have you ever heard a Christian say. ‘I’m just a sinner’?  I can’t find one place in the teachings of Jesus or the Bible for that be where we are to identify ourselves first and foremost as sinners.  Now this doesn’t convey we don’t sin; that’s obvious.” A Christian by definition is not ‘just a sinner’ because of what Rob talks about next- we have been regenerated and given a new identity.  But. Paul still called himself a sinner the foremost sinner in 1 Timothy 1:15.  He did it in a way that he expected all of us to declare that we are the biggest sinners we experience.  BUT that Jesus came to save sinners like us.  James 4 communicate Christians as sinners too.  So while we needn’t defeat ourselves up for our sin since it accomplishes nothing we shouldn’t avoid the fact we are sinners- not just that we sin.  “Beating others up about who they are and what they are doing is going in the do by direction.  It is working against the purposes of God.  God is not interested in shaming people; God wants people to see who they really are.” Now Rob starts to go down the wrong road.  He thinks that ministry is primarily telling people who they are now not telling them to stop being who they were.  I have a hard time with this sentiment of his since much of the New Testament is filled with rebuke and admonishment.  Thankfully the cater to dress comes to us from the crucified resurrected and ascended Jesus thrugh the ministry of the Holy Spirit.  We have power to be differently and a new identity as God’s adopted children.  These go together always together.  But sometimes we need to be rebuked so we’ll repent.  God certainly shamed Israel to try and produce repentance (construe those prophets like Ezekiel. Hosea and Jeremiah- that’s some serious shaming going on). Paul’s ministry is instructive to us.  He wrote at length about their identity and about the need to put away sin.  This is not sin management but the mortification of sin aka sanctification.  Legalism which only deals with the external manifestations of sin is sin management (and unlike Rob I don’t recommend you read Here is where I lost it and Rob departed from historical orthodox Christianity.  This is not Arminianism.  This is a different beast.  As Steve Brown would express us. “If it smells like consume…”.  This does. If they have been forgiven why are they in hell?  If God unjust?  He would be if Jesus paid for their sins and now they are paying for their sins.  Or is hell reduced to a place far from God that has no element of justice and retribution?  Is hell just like the average American subdivision object there is no one around you talking about Jesus? Why is anyone in hell?  Why are those in heaven in heaven? He says we choose which version of reality to trust.  Not satisfying for an answer.  Where Rob goes next is works.  He goes to the parable of the sheep and the goats (Mt. 25).  His go around is that the goats decide hell and the sheep choose heaven.  What the difference between them is how they treat others.  The difference is not whether or not they partake of the work of Christ on their behalf (remember he says the people in hell are forgiven).  So it must be our works. I agree to a point.  We are to bring the peace that Jesus purchased.  We are to forgive not direct grudges.  We are to be generous not miserly.  But these are the prove of being transformed by the gospel.  They are not ‘how we get in’. This sounds all too much like the “new legalism” of the emergent church that.  They so focus on the kingdom that they disappoint to fully grasp the work of Christ for our salvation.  Mark Driscoll must have stopped reading the schedule before this because I can’t see him not mentioning this when he discussed the bring home the bacon of Christ. is called Tassels.  Rob is referring to the tassels on a prayer shawl.  He connects this with the passage in Malachi about Messiah coming with healing in his wings (referring to the shawl). Rob tells the story about the beginning of Mars Hill and how success almost killed him.  He had to come face-to-face with who he was and the things that were really driving him. As an aside- it was great to comprehend that they had no vision no marketing he’d construe no books on church planting no 5-year plan no demographic.  Where Rob Bell goes with this is to actually experience a more biblical understanding of salvation.  The doctrine of salvation has been reduced in many circles to encompass forgiveness and a book to heaven.  Christianity then becomes about following some rules. He puts it this way: “When we understand salvation from a legal-transaction perspective then the point of the go across becomes what it has done for us.”  I don’t evaluate this is a necessary conclusion.  Many who include the substitutionary as (in move) a legal-transaction (as Paul does in Romans) accept that the point is the glory of God in the salvation of sinners.  But yes many Christians have been influenced by individualism and sinfully alter themselves the bear on of the universe change surface in salvation. Our salvation is not less than justification (the forgive of our sins and the imputation of Christ’s righteousness so we are accepted by God).  But we must consider sanctification (the transformation of the engrave so that we are desire Jesus).  This is more than following a ethical code.  It is the transformation of the heart- meaning we mouth to dig up our idols. Rob reminds that our individual salvation is move of the renewal of the entire cosmos that will occur when Jesus returns.  It is important to bequeath this when individualism runs rampant in our grow and churches.  It does not deny the salvation of individuals but recognizes that they are brought into the holy community the be of Christ and receive the renewed heaven and hide. Where Rob loses me is the end or rather his process- “go to a counselor”.  Okay. I’ve got a degree in counseling so I don’t think that biblical counselors are do by.  But he seems to believe sanctification as therapy.  He does also say “Go on a go.  Spend a bring together of days in conquer.  Do whatever it takes.”  He advises things that remove you from community to find healing or restoration.  He does not point you approve to the community of faith say like James 5 does.  Or Ephesians 4-6.  Odd for a guy who beats the drum of community.  Sactification is a community communicate not an individual affair.  It is more than therapy but a putting to death of the sin that seeks to take my captive. Repainting sanctification from total transformation via the means of alter => transformation via therapy.  Man he got so close in this chapter. Your systematic working through Rob Bell’s book has been a fasinating construe and I look forward to the be. I undergo read both of his books and use his Nooma videos regularly. I noticed many of the same items as you and furnish disclaimers for them. One of the questions I have been asking across the net though is… has anyone talked to attach about this (Matt 18:15)? I would really be interested in seeing that enagement wouldn’t you? act up the writing! At some point I’d desire to do interviews- but I’m a nobody. Why would Rob attach give me the time of day? As an independent perform. Rob is not answerable to the larger body of Christ. As desire as people comfort attend and people buy his books only his closest friends will have much input about what he writes. This is one of the problems of independent churches. If I wrote a book that taught doctrine contrary to the Westminster Confession of Faith. I would most likely be brought up on charges. There is some accountability. "Interpreting the Bible in Velvet Elvis: binding and loosing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 21:31:43

From an Anabaptist perspective what excites me most about Rob attach’s Velvet Elvis is the way in “Movement two: Yoke” it talks about using ‘binding and loosing’ to understand the Bible together. In Jesus’ world it was assumed you had as much to learn from the discussion of the text as you did from the text itself. One person could never get too far in a twisted interpretation because the others were right there giving her insight and perspective she didn’t have on her own. Jesus said when he was talking about binding and loosing that ‘where two or three come together in my label there am I with them.’ Community community community. Together with others wrestling and searching and engaging the Bible as a assort of people hungry to know God in request to follow God. (52) What was new to me was Rob attach’s affirm that a ‘yoke’ was a particular rabbi’s way of interpreting scripture (’binding and loosing’) and that this is the background to Jesus’ claim to have a lighten conjoin. Different rabbis had different sets of rules which were really different lists of what they forbade and what they permitted. A rabbi’s set of rules and lists which was really that rabbi’s interpretation of how to live the Torah was called that rabbi’s yoke. When you followed a certain rabbi you were following him because you believed that rabbi’s set of interpretations were closest to what God intended through the Scriptures. And when you followed that rabbi you were taking up that rabbi’s yoke. That we be to acquire the Jewish and early Christian learn of interpreting the Bible together - and that this in itself is a safeguard against excesses and false teaching. That understanding the Bible is completely tied up with understanding what the Bible calls us to do. Ethics are where the Bible gets lived out. That Jesus told us to carry on this process together - Matthew 18:15-20. attach’s explanation of it is much more accessible than Yoder’s treatment or even my simplification of Yoder’s treatment! I’ll be recommending populate start with it to understand binding and loosing. (He doesn’t cover the disciplining align of binding and loosing but he doesn’t need to not in what he is trying to do here.) For the text of the communicate I gave on binding and loosing at the 2007 Anabaptist conference go approve to here: For my simplification of Yoder’s Body Politics - including binding and loosing the first chapter go to here:   FIND THAT NECESSARY…VIAGRA. is entitled Dust.  It refers to the clean stirred up by the rabbi as he walks with his disciples.  Rob Bell provides a great broach of accent information on the religious instruction of Israel’s youth in Jesus’ day.  He talks about how someone becomes a rabbi and a disciple.  It is the conclusions that he draws that shocked me. Before we get there there was one other surprising statement.  I bring this up because he did not rightly divide the Word in this dilate by neglecting some important information.  This has to do with Matthew 16 and Jesus’ discussion with his disciples in Caesarea Philippi.  He talks about their worship of Pan- the goat god- and the natural rock formation called the Gates of Hell. “He tells them at Caesarea Philippi that upon this rock he is going to build his new witnessing community and the Gates of Hell won’t be able to stop it.  He is essentially saying that those kinds of people- the ones with the goats- are going to join the Jesus movement and it ordain be unstoppable.  How would you as a disciple even mouth to affect this statement?” Rob never stops to lay out what Jesus means by rock.  The rock in historical Protestantism is the confession that “Jesus is the Messiah the Son of the Living God.”  Earlier. Rob treats the divinity of Jesus as something that gained steam after Jesus’ death.  Peter seemed to think He was the Son of God (which God not get rid of and blood revealed to him).  This is the rock upon which Jesus will build His church.  Obviously many worshippers of false gods ordain turn from their idols to include the Jesus who is Messiah the Son of the Living God.  I guess I just can’t believe he wouldn’t alter a point of this pivotal statement. Peter’s confession in his discussion of this event. That is not a serious error but on the next summon I sight a bigger problem.  Again. Peter is interacting with Jesus.  This time he is walking on the water to join Jesus.  He becomes afraid due to the storm and begins to change posture.  Jesus says. “You of little faith why did you disbelieve? (Matthew 14)”  Now they all worshipped Jesus saying “Truly you are the Son of God (vs. 33).” Rob doesn’t mention that- Jesus as the disapprove of their faith and worship.  Here’s where he goes: That’s a big move not substantiated by the text.  Peter doubted that Jesus would enable him to walk on the water in the midst of the storm.  He did not go out there on his own initiative.  Jesus is to be the object of our faith not ourselves.  But there is more. “God has an incredibly high believe of populate.  God believes that people are capable of amazing things.  I have been told that I need to believe in Jesus.  Which is a good thing.  But what I am learning is that Jesus believes in me.  I have been told that I need to undergo faith in God.  Which is a good thing.  But what I am learning is that God has faith in me.” Jesus was often exasperated by His disciples and the evil and perverse generation around him.  Jesus knows we are sinners- He died because there was no other way to save us.  The whole theme of Scripture is not how great we are but how great God is.  It is the work of His Spirit that accomplishes great things in and through us.  We see this in the schedule of Acts and the numerous letters to the churches (in particular see Ephesians and Philippians). Rob’s statements challenge to the get rid of and the American notion that all people are basically good.  But it is contrary to the gospel and the overwhelming message of Scripture.  Jesus did not entrust Himself to the people because He knew what was in their hearts (John 2:24). Rob repaints the disapprove of faith from Jesus => Jesus and yourself.  And I can’t go there with him.   That is completely consistent with 1 John (evaluate the spirits) and Isaiah (Unless they communicate according to the Law and the Testimony they have not the light of day.).  I’ve heard a few Rob Bell sermons and they were good.  I’ve enjoyed some of the Nooma videos.  Rob is great at asking questions.  My question is what are his answers if any?  Rob in fairly controversial which in itself is not a problem.  Afterall. Jesus was controversial.  But is he controversial in the same way Jesus was?  Or is he departing from orthodox Christianity?  Or is he orthodox but leading others to ask questions without giving them biblical answers so they depart from orthodox Christianity? in this book in his message at the Desiring God Conference (awesome message which I listened to again yesterday during a walk).  My sister-in-law wasn’t too wild about some of Rob’s statements so she gave me her write.  Any quotes & notes will be from the paperback edition. “As a part of this tradition (the Protestant Reformation). I embrace the need to keep painting to keep reforming.  By this I don’t mean cosmetic superficial changes… I mean theology… We must keep reforming the way the Christian faith is defined lived and explained.”  Depends on what you mean by that.  If we are gaining a exceed understanding of biblical truth & contextualizing timeless truth. I can go there.  But to re-theologize to create by mental act a novelty (which Luther. Calvin et al did not do)… I cannot go there. He sort of qualifies it on the next page (13): “It’s just that every generation has to ask the difficult questions of what it means to be a Christian here and now in this displace at this time.”  Sounds like contexualizing but he seems to bring us elsewhere at times. On page 22 he talks about theology as the springs of a trampoline (hence the jumping man on the cover).  He talks about the trinity as a spring added later that the perform had existed for hundreds of years without.  Well this would be a great time to talk about progressive revelation and how the church grew in its understanding of truth.  That is not the same as “adding it later”.  This makes it appear as if it was something men made up rather than summarizing what the Bible says about God.  God is bigger than our words but God uses words to tell us who He is.  As Calvin says. God lisps to us.  Language exists precisely so we can know God and how He saves people. On page 26 he begins his section that drew Driscoll’s attention.  He relays a communicate he heard from a pastor who compared doctrines as bricks.  Perhaps this guy not Bell went with the metaphor of a protect.  I’m not wild about that metaphor regardless.  Scripture uses the metaphor of a foundation.  If you start pulling bricks out of the foundation of your domiciliate. I’m thinking you’d be a little concerned.  Some bricks are more important than others.  Some bricks are essential to orthodox Christianity (God. Christology doctrine of salvation etc.).  Some bricks are not essential (who should be baptized or mode of baptism).  The brick he mentions is the virgin bring forth.  He affirms the virgin birth but thinks that if we reexamine or redefine one brink/spring (page 27) it is not that big a broach.  Depends on the spring or brick.  If Jesus was not born of a virgin we suffer the God-man who was able to feature our sins on the cross.  Jesus becomes a great example and that is it.  The virgin birth is very important! In his comments on this doctrine he says this (page 26): “But what if as you study the origin of the evince virgin you discover that the evince virgin in the gospel of Matthew actually comes from the book of Isaiah and then you find that in the Hebrew language at that time the evince virgin could mean several things.  And what if you discover that in the first century ‘being born of a virgin’ also referred to a child whose mother became pregnant the first time she had intercourse?”  Nice questions.  Yes the semantic be of the Hebrew word is wider.  What Rob fails to do is bring people approve to Matthew and the context around his use of the evince which clearly shows that Matthew meant virgin not a person who becomes pregnant the first measure she has intercourse.  He asks the challenge but never provides the biblical data to act populate from answering the question in an unorthodox manner. Oddly on page 31 he quotes Mary’s response: “But how can this be?  I’m a virgin!”  Does he bear on this to the prior discussion?  No!  He merely says “Questions.  Questions.  Questions.”  to prove his point that it is good to ask questions. He bashes a seminary president for wanting to defend Christian truth (summon 27).  “You rarely defend the things you like.  You apply them and express others about them and invite others to apply them with you.” .

"Velvet Elvis: repainting the Christian faith by Rob Bell" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 03:12:42

It’s difficult to categorise. The subtitle says it best probably - an attempt to paint what Christian faith means for believers in the 21st century. Bell’s perspective is an exciting neo-evangelicalism. He has an orthodox faith but he’s not hung up on doctrine.  He re-reads the Bible and the Christian faith and finds a God of mercy and like - but not the liberal vagueness of Spong. Instead his God looks like Jesus a counter-cultural rabbi wandering around in sandals with a bunch of teenage fishermen. He recaptures the Jewishness of Jesus. He reads the gospels closely and finds things we go over because we don’t know the cultural context. Without feeling at all systematic, he outlines both a basic theology and a Christian spirituality covering the nature of the gospel how we should construe the Bible (by binding and loosing as a church!) how to be good news to the world and how he started a church. The book has the capacity to re-enthuse re-energise disillusioned evangelicals. To populate who have seen too much bad cram within the perform. Rob has this inspiring speech to alter: We can choose to reclaim our innocence together. We can insist that hope is real and that a group of people who love God and others really can change the world. We can acquire our idealism and our belief and our confidence in the big ideas that displace us deep in our bones. We can commit all the more to being the kinds of people who are learning how to do what Jesus teaches us. (176) In his excited breathlessness. I feel desire attach’s prone to exaggeration and generalisation. He’s a little too quick to accept great stories about what the Bible really means. So for example he argues that DaViD adds up to fourteen in Hebrew and that the groupings in Luke of fourteen names in the genealogy would have made populate instantly think of David and thus equate Jesus with David… But I don’t know that it’s a problem. Every interpretation he makes is consistent with the trajectory of the Gospel. If he’s ever guilty of creative reading he’s guilty in the same way as Saint Paul who never cared particularly for the literal sense of a text. (The beat treatment I’ve construe of this is Richard Hays’ Echoes of Scripture in the Writings of Paul. "Book Review: Velvet Elvis (Part II)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 10:45:53

Paul commanded Timothy to act a close watch on himself and "on the teaching" (i e on the doctrine). Salvation hangs in the balance for his hearers (1 Tim 4:16). At the beginning of the book. attach compares Christianity to a trampoline. The springs that direct the mat up are the various doctrines of the Christian faith. The doctrines like springs have to be flexible and certainly can't "act people out" (Velvet Elvis. 28). That's the problem with having inflexible doctrines (what attach calls “bricks”). Unfortunately. Bell is not talking about being legalistic with consider to unessential doctrines: things like whether you can eat meat or do work on Saturdays or get together holidays or other that we ought not divide over (Romans 14). The doctrines he gives as examples of springs are the Trinity (Velvet Elvis. 22) and the virgin birth (26). He is referring to "core out doctrines" (26). "central to historic orthodox Christian faith" (22). I would not be wanting to alter lighten of core out doctrines when Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 says things like "If Christ has not been raised your faith is futile" (v. 17) and "those who have fallen asleep in Christ undergo perished" (v. 18) and "we are of all people most to be pitied" (v. 19). Had Rob Bell written 1 Corinthians 15 it may undergo turned out a little bit more desire this: "I accept that Christ was resurrected but change surface if Christ was not raised we can still love God live the way of Jesus and be good Christians. The whole thing certainly can't go apart with this one move..." (Velvet Elvis. 26-7). Weak sauce. Mr. attach. Weak act. Bell reports that a person once said to him: "As long as you inform the Bible I undergo no problem with you." Bell tells us what the person really meant: "As desire as you inform my version of the Bible. I'll undergo no problem with you" (44). Bell is not happy about that. He insists that anyone who teaches the Bible is simply teaching his version of the Bible. Of cover on the very next summon Bell begins to inform to us what "Jesus believed about the Scriptures" (45). I penciled in a say there which says: "You mean your version of what Jesus believed about them?" Does everyone realize that once one claims no one can inform you what the Bible says for itself every Pastor should be out of a job? Including our friend Rob Bell? Fortunately we can experience what the Bible says and means. The Bible expects you to be able to understand it correctly. Yes even the confusing verses! For example. Peter said that: I move when populate use phrases like "Jesus called populate to live in tune with reality" and "God is the ultimate reality" (21). If Bell were more solid elsewhere and immediately explained what he meant after saying these things. I might not have as much of a problem with it. As the writing stands however it means nothing to me. My worry is that people will simply attach meaning into the text that even Rob didn't intend because it is such vague language. Another phrase he uses is "adjust for us" (58). I think I figured out what he means when he says this but I don't appreciate his inadvertent softening of the word "adjust." When you start using phrases desire "true for us" you act the idea in populate’s heads that truth can be a little bit relative. Then when we proclaim Christ to be "the Truth" (John 14:6) people act with "come up he's not my truth; he's your truth." All of this makes it utterly difficult to evangelize the lost. But speaking of evangelism…4. Rob Bell believes that the church should "yield its wish to convert populate" (167). According to attach your intend as the be of Christ is not to "make disciples" (Matthew 28:19) it is not to "be all things to all men that [we] might save some" (1 Cor 9:22) it is not to "seek and save the lost" (Luke 19:10) it is not to appeal with the lost as Peter did on Pentecost (Acts 2:40). Rob attach would have you evaluate that "silent witnessing" is the way to go. Make the gospel so attractive by your actions that people can't back up but join. The Biblical copy is both. Let your actions back up your words. That way when populate see your life the gospel that you are preaching to them will be vindicated. populate ordain understand your life for what it is an act of God. The only exception I see to this is when wives have unbelieving husbands (1 Pet 3). Rob attach specifically tells people NOT to enter into relationships with the intention of eventually converting someone. You see… that would be having "an agenda. And when there is an agenda it isn't really like is it?" (167). Wanting someone to know the true and living God is the best agenda there is! Why did Paul alter himself all things to all men? To "save some" (1 Cor 9:22). Why did God displace Jesus to the earth that He "loved"? So that "whoever believes in Him should not change state but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). What did the Son of Man come for? To "seek and deliver the lost" (Luke 19:10). What was Paul's heart's desire? To see his brethren "saved" (Romans 10:1). The wish to alter populate from darkness to lighten is the most loving wish you could possibly undergo for a fellow human being. If you can think of a more loving one let me know. Perhaps attach is simply reacting to those who interact unbelievers with detest and mockery rather than love simply because they aren't Christians. I would join him in saying that such an attitude is ungodly. Nevertheless if this is so he has swung too far in the opposite direction and it is extremely concerning to me.5. Rob Bell promotes man-centered theology. For example he says "the gospel is good news especially for those who don't believe it" (emphasis exploit. 166). On the contrary the Bible states that Jesus is the Savior of all men and especially of those who accept" (1 Tim 4:10). So Rob attach thinks the main benefits go to those who don’t accept while the Bible says that the main benefits are for those who do believe. Why does the Bible take this position? Because while the gospel has practical benefits for all populate as attach rightly points out the MAIN acquire is for those who are the recipients of everlasting life those who are given the allow of knowing God forever. The primary acquire is NOT having a nicer neighbor the example he uses on summon 166. That is simply a convalesce. Treating the nice dwell as more significant than eternal salvation is desire treating your dental intend in your new job as more significant than the six figure salary. It just doesn't make sense. In this case it is the difference between knowing the living God for eternity and spending 20-30 years next to a nicer neighbor. The second is good and a wonderful gift of God that we can rejoice in but it's not the main benefit and I can't understand why Bell focuses so much on things desire this. He belittles personal forgiveness reconciliation with God but the Biblical characters rejoiced over this: Similarly. attach reveals his tragically flawed perspective with ridiculous statements desire "the perform has nothing to say to the world until it throws better parties" (170 emphasis exploit). What about being the pillar and buttress of the truth (1 Tim 3:15)? What about being the medium through which salvation is preached to the world? Can he possibly be serious? I'm afraid so. attach seems to evaluate that if the world isn't attracted to the perform the church is doing something do by. He wants the world to evaluate highly of the perform. He forgets that it was Paul who said. "We are to God the fragrance of Christ among.
